Hey guys. Just a quick update. My computer died in the process of creating this video and it took me a long time to get everything set back up again! I needed to get a completely new computer and all of my files on the old computer and my external hard drive got destroyed as well. So sorry about that. This video actually ended up working well as a test to make sure everything is in a semi-stable state again, so next week should be MUCH better :)

I'm not sure and I don't claim to be an expert in Japanese culture, but they are common in video games. Evil Ryu, Violent Ken, Liquid Snake, Metal Sonic, Waluigi and so on.
@gc3k
@gc3k 5 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of examples of doppelgangers in Japanese fiction, a famous short story is "The Red Ogre Who Cried" or "Naita Aka Oni" (it's possible that Metal Gear Solid V, codenamed "Project Ogre," is inspired by the story)
@Lugbzurg
@Lugbzurg 5 жыл бұрын
@@gc3k You can see that kind of influence in things like Devil May Cry, with Dante and Virgil, or Re:Zero, where they do it completely literally, with Rem and Ram. Sonic the Hedgehog, on the other hand, did it in reverse, as the tradition is for the red one to be all high-strung and out-of-control, while the blue one is the composed one. I should also point out that ogres and oni are *nothing* alike. Referring to an oni as an "ogre" makes about as much sense as calling them a dolphin.
@gc3k

Their "ogre" isn't our "ogre" (just like our idea of "demons" is totally different in Japan and Buddhism), that's what those mythological creatures are called in English

Just because they make games and publish doesn't mean they can't their competitors, Sony Music can do things with Nintendo but it doesn't mean it's Sony Interactive Entertainment that is involved. Publishing can be done by any company Activision wants as long as the terms work out between the companies. This isn't rare these days when publishing through other companies in other regions. Sure we may have companies that have regional divisions but Activision might not have a Japanese Division or Sega is their likely option for publishing in that region that was willing to take it on. Who knows. I don't know the ins and outs obviously but it's not unheard of.

Thanks to one of your previous videos about Crash, I learnt about Megumi's origin and man, I find it sad that in the Latin America Spanish dub, there's no way you can tell from where each of the character is (although their name might give you a hint) since they all sound Mexican native and don't use foreign terms (like Megumi's "douzo"). I guess it's part of a resource in localization called "internationalization", where localizers sacrifice stuff thinking if left untouched players would get confused. I only play the game in English now but that's me with every game lol Nice race between Crash and "Nise" Crash, btw

I wish that in the japan box art, the other characters also got the japan redesign treatment because Crash’s Japanese design Clashes against the others in the artwork, and it doesn’t go well at all seeing that the other characters have the US’s more detailed designs and textures while Crash’s design is very simplistic and cartoony but doesn’t blend in. Though even if all the characters got the japan redesign treatment, the box art we have in the states and everywhere else will always be superior.

Changing the 'TNT' text to a bomb symbol is the type of localization that I hate the most. As a kid, I had no idea what TNT meant, so I learned it from Crash. The localizers here basically reduced the educational value of the game (TNT is called TNT in Japan as well) and made the bombs more obvious and boring. Overall a very bad move, both in terms of entertainment and educational value, much like 4kids changing rice balls into Western foods in the original Pokemon dub.

Localisation is also why Rockman's name was changed to Megaman in Western releases of the game, because different countries and cultures appeal to different types of characters and wording.

just wondering can we get an english release with japanese voices? that would make the game interesting! i get both cultures are radically different the west wants to show power and weapons the east wants to show family and fans and fame it's understandable
@suntannedduck2388
@suntannedduck2388 5 жыл бұрын
That would be great but sadly I feel that's only if it came from Japan first due to how they know English fans will care about the 'original voices/original way it was present' similar to how it's no different in anime DVD/Blu-Ray releases which wouldn't be the case here. The closest you'd get besides that mindset (not much of a point to make I know but it's a thought more than a point) if you had the European version where they put all the languages/voice audio on the disk instead of a separate version for each country type situation otherwise I don't think they do it that way. Still I think it would be interesting to experience it that way.
