Can I install a chuck that's larger than the 3.1 inch? I want to secure a piece of metal that's over 4 inches in diameter with the jaws in the reverse position.

This is perfectly logical. have an old Craftsman 4-jaw and I figgered this out intuitively. I used a pencil as and indicator. But why would anyone intentionally buy a non self-centering chuck? Why do they even still make them?

Independent jaw chucks are for holding parts that are not round or square.
