This is one of the best videos I've seen on this topic. Not many other videos are going to mention banging on the compressor with a rubber mallet and the hard-start kit. Very comprehensive. The only thing you didn't mention is that turning the fan with your screwdriver like that will sometimes get the fan started in a pinch.

A hot condenser fan motor that's not spinning is either a bad capacitor, faulty bearing causing the fan to stick, or a bad winding in the fan motor. Thanks for watching!

This is a really good video of how to. I used your steps to troubleshoot the AC issue I was having... somehow, i had turned off the power to the AC why attending to water leakage in the attic few days back. So after watching your video on two or three occasions, I troubleshooted on the unit using the steps and it led me to the AC power source that I never knew of it function in the attic. No repair, no parts needed just put back the switch on! This event also given me the opportunity of cleaning the evaporator section which has been causing terrible odour coming from the AC for a while now. That saves us a lot, we almost resulted to calling professional to fix the issues. Thanks a lot Just to add though, all units are not the same, my thermostat is OLD, it is electro-mechanical using mercury for contact switch and the attic AC uses Gas for heating; the outside compressor uses a booster capacitor alongd with one small main capacitor looking rusty, and the power source from the wall to the unit is connected with no fuse in place. This is how we got the house, knew nothing about AC connection before now. Good tutor, thanks.

You are such a great teacher! Thanks so much for clear concise video that walks viewers like me through all the steps from the thermostat to knocking on the compressor with a rubber mallet 🙂. In my case, my blower fan ran, the condenser fan ran, the compressor ran (but louder than usual), but the air blowing out registers in the house was not cool. I noticed at the condenser unit outside the air blowing out on top was not warm, and the suction line was sweating a little, no icing on it. Wonder what else would be the problem with it?

@@electronicsNmore yes, I have a heat pump. Trane XR15. I wish I had seen your video before I started looking at it. I would have saved a lot of time. Very clear and concise. I appreciate your effort (paypal'd). I'm a EE so I just looked at the circuit diagrams and traced it out. I've seen other people mention the reversing value sticking but haven't had time to look at diagnosing that but I would think that if it was stuck the system would be blowing heat which it's not. Just blowing temped air. I also don't think it's the value because I never use the heat pump. Gas is cheaper. I wasn't sure if there is anything else I can look at. I was thinking of buying a manifold set but I don't know the pressures and if refrigerant is the issue I couldn't buy it because I don't have a license but it's still gnawing at me because I like solving problems.

That was very kind of you to send that Paypal donation, it's much appreciated. Is the compressor working? Do any of the refrigerant lines feel cool or cold to the touch? Any show condensation on them? With the system powered off, and after waiting a few minutes for the pressure to equalize in the lines, you can try applying 24V-27VAC directly to the reversing valve to see if you hear the solenoid make a click sound. It's possible that your solenoid uses a higher voltage than 24-27vac. You should buy a manifold gauge set at Harbor Freight, they're good to have and can help you diagnose problems. It sounds like you have low refrigerant. If you have more questions, just ask. Thanks!

@@electronicsNmore thanks, I just typed up a long list of everything I tested in which I determined the compressor was not running. I went back to the unit to check one thing and saw the issue. A very obvious issue (I'm glad I removed the fan housing). One of the legs to the compressor was not routed through its hole, instead it was between the sheet metal and fan housing. The sheet metal had cut through the insulation melting a nice hole in the metal. The install was 7 years ago so I doubt going back to the installer would help. What's the recommenced fix? It's 12awg. I just used a butt splice. Trane should have used a grommet.

Well as a woman i am learning.. The air conditioner was on cool but blowing warm air .i went outside and felt the air coming out of the fan it was cool..not warm.. Then checked batteries in thermostat..put in new ones..turned it to off..waited a few mins turned on and it started blowing out cool air inside the house..went outside and the fan was blowing out hot air as you said it should ..thanks as now it is cooling off inside.. Now i may purchase a new thermostat.. As i called my air cind. Service for a check up and everything was fine in May.. ?? But right now it is cool!! Thank you for the info

My AC recently stopped working. I watched this and got some good tips. The blower would not come on or the compressor outside. I have a gas air handler. When it quit the refrigerant line froze up. So I checked it for power. Good to go. I took the cover off the compressor outside and pushed in the switch. It came on. So then I went inside and checked the blower motor. I checked to see if it turned. It did. I could hear refrigerant circulating., but it would not come on. When the thermostat was on, I carefully felt the motor. It was warm. So I suspected the capacitor. I took it out which took about 2 minutes. Put a new one in and it cranked right up! One $10 part did the trick. Now I am going to keep a spare capacitor at home.

Great video and explanation. My condenser and fan both stopped while the air handler is still running. Yesterday I opened the outdoor unit and visually inspected wiring and capacitors, turned power back on and it worked again. Ran fine for 24 hours and now they both shut off again. Will start with power verification but weird that both are not on.

When it stops working, you need to make sure the contactor is triggered and that you have 240V. Could be the compressor overheating.

Awesome! Thanks! My capacitor went out on my outdoor compressor/condenser last summer, twice. The first one I put in was just the closest I could find that day it ended up going out a week later but at that point I have a proper one. Its was stupid of me to do that since it controls the fan but thankfully both times it went out I was sitting at my desk and my condenser is just outside my window so I head it go out. I am just glad I was here, if I wasn't I could have easily burnt up the unit. Or at least I assume I could have. I don't know if this thing has a thermal fuse or anything.

Absolutely the best a/c troubleshooting video!!! Great job!!! I have a trane xi19.... 2 stage system. The two run capacitors are only for compressors. How does the condenser fan turn on? Direct connection from contactor?

@@electronicsNmore thanks...I for one greatly appreciate the depth of your videos ...will share with others. BTW...Fan does not come on with either stage 1 or 2 compressor contactors...seems to me it must be the control board at the condenser that turns on the fan....what do u think?

Excellent video.. Personally I would like to see this industry get it's act together with wiring. Nix the wire nuts and provide a terminal strip for low and high voltage as needed inside and out. Sloppy electrical that needs to be cleaned up. Never understood why they do what they do and it can cause issues with poor wire management.

Very informational! I have very limited electrical skills and no A/C skills but your tutorial helped me fix my A/C. I only had to buy a 30 dollar capacitor instead of paying a A/C person 120 just to come to my home, that's not including the hourly charge or parts charge so I'm guessing you saved me at minimum150 bucks. Thanks! oh and now I may go get my gas certification and make some money on the side...HAHA

My AC just crapped out and watching this i realized ill have to fork over the $250/hour to get a pro to look at. Looking at you individually manually diagnosing every single sub system makes me wish these systems were self monitoring, and had an instrument panel on the main unit with green lights for each and every sub system that went red when and if they failed.

Always go to thermostat first. turn fan auto switch from auto to fan on . if blower comes on this will tell you that there is 240 volt and 24 volts present at air handler, this will tell you complete blower motor circuit is functional and that transformer ,fan relay board is functional. if you remove front of thermostat and jump out low voltage from red 24 volt hot to yellow cool and do not keep a good contact on terminals you stand a good chance on overloading compressor from multiple starts putting compressor in a bind and causing compressor failures unless there is a time delay at condensing unit. most standard units use compressor time delay from digital thermostat. condenser unit and evaporator coil have same size tubing it is the metering device or expansion valve that changes refrigerant from hot liquid to cold gas then heat from house can be absorbed and removed by condenser fan to outside air. always make sure to clean drain line well and condenser coils while there. also if 24 volt is lost check fan relay board fuse and or fuse on transformer. make sure your attic is very well ventilated this can save customer 25 percent on light bill.and avoid profuse sweating of duct work.

I searched through a ton of videos, I found this to be one of the best, and more comprehensive step-by-step instructions on how to diagnose HVAC issue, especially if you are attempting this for the first time. I am a subscriber now. I do have one diagnosis question, which perhaps you can include in your instruction. If the AC is blowing hot air in the vents, but the return side (pipe) of the Air Handler is very cold, does that imply that the Compressor unit in the Condenser outside is working? Thanks!

I did this and you were right about the red and green because it immediately started but all you heard was the fan noise and that was all and the house stayed warm all night

You didn't do as I said in the video. Connect R & G, then after the fan turns on, add the Y wire to them. The outside unit should power up.

Mine wasn't blowing cool air, Fan was working fine, Tech guy said it was compressor, Said I needed a new unit, I turned it on a few days later and it was working again?, Does a bad compressor work intermittently?

You could have a compressor that locks up. If that's the problem, a hard-start kit may be the solution.

Thanks for the great video! I have one question, what would cause the fan to start then stop after about a minute? That's what mine did and when I immediately tried to spin it after it stopped, it was stuck/ seized. However, when I turned the unit off and tried to spin the fan it spun without resistance. BTW, I just replaced the run capacitor as well.
