It seems quite 'all nor nothing'. Japanese forces are generally weaker than US, but I do wonder how things would have gone if they had won the tactical advantage/initiative roll....

I suppose one game benefit of the small island rule is the ability to redeploy what might be overkill forces to other operations. And just chalk up the action cost to logistics or something. I can see why fictionally it feels off though.

Yes, that is a good way of looking at it, although after my experience the next time I'm tempted to employ overkill all the way. It seems the only way to be relatively sure of clearing our the tough nut islands.
