I am about 1/3 of the way through this video but “dont trade center pawns if if solves opponent problems” might be the best chess principles i have heard in a long long time. Its concrete. Its easy to judge. I feel like i just got better at chess just with that concept alone!

Igor Smirnov sums it up as "to take is a mistake". Of course he doesn't mean it's _always_ a mistake, but rather that you should think twice before exchanging anything (central pawns or otherwise).

I like that phrase, it sounds catchy! It's a great reminder to always think twice before making exchanges, especially with central pawns. Thanks for sharing!

In the Ruy Lopez it often happens that White will get a pawn on e4 and a pawn on d4, and after a while Black will have a pawn on e5 and also advance his pawn in d6 to d5, so all four central squares will be filled with pawns, symmetrically. This is confusing. If the rule is to take towards the center, what does that mean in this case?

In that case, you need to rely on good calculations because the position is very sharp and tactics are likely to be present. Black usually should play exd4 first if he wants to push d5, as this can help open the center and create imbalances.
