I didn't grow up with Conrail, but the S3L/RS3L was the standard horn on my hometown railroads the B&O and C&O long before the Chessie-era K5LA, so that along with the many ex-Conrail locos I've seen on the NS gives me a slight connection with them.

Leslie RS3Ls have a special place in my heart. Because they remind me of the Warbonnets. When I hear a Warbonnet RS3L, it’s just haunting. There’s something about them that gives locomotives a soul like no other horn does today. Leslies today haven’t lost a single ounce of charm unlike Nathan which was ruined in 2007 when they were bought by Micro Precision. That’s what Nathan needs to do today: make horns that when they blow make you go “WWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!”
@CentralPennRailProductions6 жыл бұрын
There is a Nathan K3 horn out there that sounds like an RS3L, although not many exist on locomotives. The K3LB which uses the 1L, 1 and 3B bell, which play very similar notes. I did manage to catch one recently and I am working on a K3 video now that will probably be up next month sometime. Thanks for watching, ATSF did have a lot of RS3L's, sadly it's rare to see those locomotives leading out here.
@AlexTrain52496 жыл бұрын
Well apart from the K5HLB, K3LB, and K5H. If you want to know the healthiest ATSF RS3L today. It’s the one on 649.
@Nethanel7735 жыл бұрын
My like of the Leslie's is hearkening back to the pre-merger era railroading. Plus they sound they scarier than the Nathan's. Don't know if that makes a difference to motorists and pedestrians, but it's a plus. There was a certain configuration of Nathan K5 that was heard on all CSX Dash-8s and wide cabs of the 90s. Those were screamers, but certainly not throaty like a Leslie.
@BenjaminEsposti5 жыл бұрын
Another sad thing is that modern locomotives usually just use an ON/OFF momentary button for the horn, so you can't "feather" it.
@DMTruckSpotting4 жыл бұрын
Maybe they sound more haunting because they are all in Minor & Diminished chords. The only other train horns like that from Nathan are the old cast P1234A5, M5, & M5H.

Central Penn Rail Productions I mainly go out for CSX trains. Sometimes I hear horns I will probably never hear again. That’s why I stay ready in case something I can only see once will come. Me and a friend were out one night and didn’t expect it until my dad alerted me and told me a train with BNSF was coming. It had not only 1 BNSF locomotive, it had UP, and CP. I might not see that type of lash up in a long time or ever again.

I like the Nathan's because they have harmony, but there's something about a Leslie that strikes fear in the heart. Really lets you know danger's coming your way, if you don't move! I like that. Thanks for putting this up.
@Nethanel7735 жыл бұрын
Former Conrail territory helps explain the ubiquity of the Leslie's. I never heard them down South. They were popular on L&N Alcos, but after they were retired, it was all Nathan's. No complaining, I like the Nathan harmonies, but where I'm from, Leslie's are exotic. Again, thanks for sharing this.

@@Nethanel773 I thought all L&N locomotives, from their GP30's to their U30C's to their SD40-2's, had S3L's/RS3L's after they stopped recieving the M5 on their new steamlined passenger locos and early Geeps.

Considering the Sony AX700 is on the market at the moment as a new 4k HDR camcorder, but noting that it has a very steep price point, is the AX100, in your opinion, a good camcorder regarding noise, focus, shutter lag, & image quality, despite being almost 4 years old?
