I remember back in the early 1990's when I would hear the Southern Pacific SD40 or SD45 units with their really loud growl going uphill over Donner Summit or Tehachapi Pass. Nowadays, it's mostly GE (neé Wabtec) ES44DC or ES44AC units with their very distinct "chugging" sound.

Those SD40-2s rumbled and roared, alright. And they were intimidating looking, too - like a dragster with the raked out wheel bogies and long platforms. Still see some of them in mainline service, but usually as trailing units. I once suggested to Norfolk Southern, that they should add some Conrail blue - and green, or something - to spiff up that dull paint scheme.

I miss those blue SD40-2's with two white bars. I used to see them all the time when I used to live across from the locomotive bypass. Then the green and gray leaser units started showing up. 10 years I later, GE's Dash 9's started showing up. Now it's all you see these days is the wide cabs. I do like SD40-2's SD50&60's better than wide cabs. Even EMD's SD70Mac's and SD70ACe's are wide cabs now. I like Spartan cabs better for some reason.

At 7:02, why do those UP locos have red paint with stripes?
@CentralPennRailProductions5 жыл бұрын
It's a cheap patch job. Connecticut Southern hasn't repainted their locomotives but most of the ex-UP locos on New England Central have since been repainted into G&W orange.

Great video and catches! The local freights in my area typically use one or two SD40-2s. In fact, the A81 I caught yesterday morning featured a nice pair of them running LHF making quite a racket, even though they were moving rather slowly. A82, back when it still ran, was always a fun catch as well due to usually having a three or four SD40-2s for power (or some other older EMD, as I caught a high-hood GP38-2 leading it once), along with a good-sized freight, but sadly, NS got rid of the train earlier this year.

Hakeem Sd70M I live in Arizona east of Phoenix. I’m somewhat close to the PHX sub but it’s been a few years since SD40Ns regularly visited Phoenix and because of my schedule I’m lucky to get trackside at all. I know BNSF occasionally brings SD40-2s here but I’m never able to go out that far to see them.
