Sydney Tower or Centerpoint Tower is the second tallest tower in the southern hemisphere. Standing at 309 metres Centrepoint Tower opened it's doors to the public in 1981.
To coincide the opening and advertise it's observation deck there have been several entertaining TV commercials from the 1980s. The first one features a catchy song by Petula Clarke called I know a place although it has been adapted.
Sydney Tower is seen as the centre piece of the Sydney skyline.

What do you call the tower, Centrepoint Tower or Sydney Tower? For me it's Centrepoint Tower. Do you think they will ever build a building taller than Centrepoints 309 metres taller in Sydney?

Centre point tower always. It looked crap with all that scaffolding it had around under the KFC bucket shape some years ago. And that huge AMP logo.. it looks great as is here

Yeah, thinking back I used both names interchangeably. I guess what the marketing material was pushing at the time.

I worked on centre point tower building and installing the audio visual units and telescopes, there were never any safety rails around the outside where the window were to be, I had to install panels above the openings and suffered nightmares for many years after. Sometimes before the air baffles were added to the lift shafts, it was faster to run down the stairs than catch the lift running at minimum speed and wait your turn. The good thing about working on the tower was the $2.92 an hour.

Wow, thanks for sharing your experience working on this amazing piece of Sydney history. How times have changes with regarding to WHS. I've seen old videos of construction sites where workers are walking along beams 100 metres in the air with scaffold on their shoulder and a cigarette in the other hand. I don't know how they done it.

I used to lean against the windows and pretend I was falling to my death until somebody came and told me off. It was great. The 80s filled with wonder and poor dietary decisions. I miss it
