Great vid thankyou. I can't find any other information about the MK 2 Olifant that I'm curious about. I'm sure I read years ago in a magazine that the Mk2 was going to have a 120mm L44 gun instead of the 105mm. Did the Sth Africans try a 120mm L44 gun or thinking about it maybe in the book it may have been a mistake. Could you verify please have you in your research seen anything about it.
@Militaryheritage2 ай бұрын
@@tasman006 No, the 120mm was never considered for the Olifant Mk2. The TTD was to be equipped with one and could even accommodate a 140mm.

unrelated question about an illustration on your website: are the color schemes of the British M5 halftrack (lend-lease version built by International Harverster) and the other British halftrack on the same page, both North Africa, based on existing photos? If so where can I find these pictures? And are there any other British North Africa halftrack color schemes available somewhere? Thanks

Great video, thanks. I was serving in the SADF in 1989, either late February or March, when a MAN tank transporter delivered a Soviet T-72 to School of Armour in Bloemfontein. Although it was supposed to be a secret, and was well covered by tarpaulins, two corporals, who were mates, snuck their two squads into the 'secure' warehouse housing the tank... We were quite excited to look at this enemy beast up close. If I recall correctly, the T-72 had been illegally purchased from Poland as the Iron Curtain was collapsing. Obviously the new Olifant tank upgrade project had already started prior to the T-72's arrival for evaluation. There were already numerous T-34's, T-55's etc at School of Armour captured mostly in Angola, that had been evaluated by the SADF.

@@sirkermitthefirstoffrogeth9622 No thank you. I was serving the Apartheid regime at the time as a National Service conscript. I may have wanted to be a soldier prior to serving, but the reality was they just wanted to teach me how to hate like they hated.

@@robert-trading-as-Bob69 While that is true, as a black South African, I respect those who answer the call to arms regardless of the Regime they fought for. Some might have malicious intent to inflict harm onto those they are fighting, some or a lot more did it to protect their family and or country. But, thank you for your perspective.

@@sirkermitthefirstoffrogeth9622 I found that I disliked blind hatred while in the army, and decided that all people deserve respect. I suppose I should be grateful to the Afrikaaners for that lesson.

It is fascinating to see the inside of OMC. It looks exactly the same as the American defense contractors my Father was working for during this time, down to the hairy engineers with glasses fussing over drawings and drafts while hairy workers in coveralls fiddled with parts and machines on the factory floor.
