Century plant flower (Agave americana), not a Bonsai

I recently had the opportunity to see a century plant flower which looks incredibly like a tall Bonsai, when viewed from far away. But obviously, it is not a Bonsai.
The Agave americana flower is a wonder of nature. It grows up to 8 meters in height, with the flower stalk branching out and giving the impression of a tree with multiple foliage pads. So you may confuse it with an exaggerated version of a Bonsai or other ornamental trees.
The sad part about seeing this agave flower is that the plant dies soon after flowering. But that's not the end of it. Nature took care of this. The place of the mother Agave americana plant will be filled in by all the other century plant pups (babies) that grow at its base. So, who knows, maybe in 30 or 40 years I can go back to this nice place in Greece and see a forest of century plant flowers from the offspring of the plants I filmed.

Just incredible, it only flowers once, at the end of its life, and then dies. From a far it looks kind of like a Norfolk Island pine

Yes, it's one of those organisms (animals included) which basically live their live just to reproduce and assure the continuity of the species. My first thought when I saw it in the distance was that it must be some kind of conifer, but when I got closer... Surprise, surprise!

My agave flowered after 10 years. Now its starving but it gave pups: more than 1000. It was wonderful to see and smell the flowers. I am sad that the plant has to die after flowering but it cost a lot of energy to produce the enormous stalk and flowers and after blooming the pups on the stalk.

That's awesome! Another benefit of living in a warm climate besides being able to grow tropical trees outside all year round.

Yes, it's not something you're likely to see if you live in a climate with cold winters and even in the right climate it cand take 30 or 40 years for them to flower. I really feel lucky for accidentally seeing these at the right moment in Grece this year.

It was something new for me too. I had no idea that agaves make such tall flowers. At first I thought it was a very large ornamental tree trained to have those bonsai-like foliage pads. I saw a bunch of them in Greece but maybe there are some in Sicilly also. Your climate should be suitable for growing them.

@@OddBonsai there is something similar here, even spontaneous, but I have never thought they could be flowers. I thought they were some kind of giant asparagus or something like this. That's a great discovery for me
@OddBonsai
@OddBonsai 3 жыл бұрын
Agaves are members of the Asparagaceae family so that does explain the similarity. So you do have such old and flowering agave specimens in your area?
@RosarioCostanzo

@@OddBonsai so now I know we have😄but not from agave, just from some asparagus and flowers are about 1 meter tall. It's similar but it doesn't come from a succulent, you just see this flower who comes out from the ground
