BEHIND THE SCENES SECRETS - How Gerry Anderson Began His Film Career Before Thunderbirds

Everybody has to start somewhere and before he became the co-creator of Supermarionation classics like 'Supercar', 'Fireball XL5', 'Stingray', 'Thunderbirds', 'Captain Scarlet', and 'Joe 90' as well as live-action series 'UFO' and 'Space:1999', Gerry Anderson began his film career on the bottom rung of the ladder and worked his way up. In this documentary featuring unseen interview material, Gerry remembers his earliest days as Gainsborough Pictures and Pinewood Studios as well as working on the a wild series about international oddities called 'You've Never Seen This' that saw him come face to face with giants, musical animals, and super-fast cyclists.

It was founded by a group of filmmakers who first collaborated on Filmed in Supermarionation, the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's hit puppet shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet.
Since then, we have worked for a multitude of high-profile clients including ITV, BBC, Mammoth Productions, British Film Institute and the Halifax working on projects such Thunderbirds, Endeavour, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
In addition to our regular filmmaking services, we specialise in ‘Supermarionation’ - the puppetry filming technique used to make shows like Thunderbirds and have collaborated with ITV repeatedly to provide specialised services. Our work has been featured on The One Show, This Morning, Good Morning Britain, BBC News, ITV News and Mastermind.

I was born and always lived and do in Blackpool, as a kid there was a Space 1999 exhibition (where Sea-life is now on the prom) I spent that much time in there eventually the staff just let me come and go for free. One day Gerry came to visit, I was only 14 at the time and knew this was like the Queen turning up. I was introduced to Gerry he said hello and he gave me a black and white photo of an Eagle from the show and quickly moved on. Totally true story, I'm now 57, happy childhood days :)

@@marcse7en Oh yeah, it was so clever. Looked like you literally went into the Tardis and was bigger on the inside. Obviously, it was simply stairs leading down to a basement exhibition but to me, as a kid it was totally magical. Happy days

@@onlyme219 That exhibition is legendary to me, and to a lot of people of a certain age! There have been books written about it! The 2004 David Boyle exhibition wasn't a patch on the original! ... It's a Shoe Cellar now, but somebody said the exhibition space is only used for storage. I'd love to see the space where the exhibition was! It was a nightclub in the 60s! ... If I won the lottery, I'd like to recreate the exhibition, just as it was in its heyday! I can dream!

I wonder how much input (if any) Gerry had to the editing of the Fireflash 'crash' sequence from Thunderbirds? Everything about that sequence is perfection. The editing is sublime - even by today's standards. The excitement they managed to instil with the cuts, the varying shot angles, the models, the puppets, the music. No wonder I found drawings in the loft that I made as a small child, depicting Fireflash with no undercarriage being supported by elevator cars.... It must have had a massive impact on me... It must have, I grew up to be an elevator car driver.

great advice 'how to cut a picture' Gerry hired some great editors (Bob dearberg the new avengers, the professionals) reminds one of the recutting of ep 1 of space 1999 (shot in late 1973) informative content.
