Thank you, Muzammil, for bringing an ad executive on the podcast. Atiya seems like a well-read person, and I am pretty sure she knows her job well. The podcast, however, wasn't much insightful. I felt as if she kept defending the Pakistani ad industry unnecessarily. The fact is that the Pakistani ad scene is rotten. It isn't doing much good. And when I say good, I am not talking about social campaigns. I am talking about the grabbing attention part. It seems as if the ad executives in the country, the creative heads, the copywriters, all collectively lack cultural insights. From outside, it feels as if it's an elite club that isn't even aware of what 90% of Pakistan and Pakistanis are about. When she said that the Indian and American ads we remember are just the top-tier ads and that they are also doing a lot of bad work, I couldn't disagree more. Sure, they may be doing bad work, too, but about 8 out of 10 Indian ads are a delight to watch. They are funny, insightful, culturally sensitive, and also manage to get their point across. And I don't live in a silo. Between IPL and Shark Tank, I get many opportunities to consume those ads. Compare those with the PSL ads, and about 8 out of 10 of them feel thoughtless, and as you rightly pointed out, are usually milking a set trend. Just before the podcast, I was on Facebook and saw the new KFC ad. Same Young Stunners, same rap-focused approach, same everything. That ad is what laziness basically looks like if you throw money at it. Perhaps the last good thing to come out of Pakistani ad scene was the Knorr ad from the cat's perspective. That's all I can remember. Therefore, a lot remains unanswered and I would request you to bring a few more people from Pakistan's ad scene on the podcast, so that we get to know where the problem lies.

7:28 Slight disagreement.There are some brand conscious people around, but this example would better suit brands like Chanel or LV. Because I buy Nike shoes for the comfort and engineering aspect of it, which actually holds an intrinsic value in the shoe, as compared to some brands with marked up prices just for the sake of how they are perceived.

For Anita Zaidi, CAMEL cigarettes wanted an advertisement in the nonsmoking zone of an air liner (American). Nonsmoking section mey cigarettes kaa advertising. Naa mumkin hai. That was my reaction when my brother questioned me and I was 19 years old. He answered himself when I said I couldn’t. Smoking is not allowed, even CAMEL Cigarettes. I think, Muzammil, now you understand what is the impact of advertising.

Wonderful podcast, I think our traditional media industry and government bodies also need rebranding and reimagining their mission statements. Muzammil if you can call upon some intellectual guests (tv journalists or govt officials) from these sectors as well that would be an interesting conversation to hear to see what roadblocks we have in our nation building strategies

So we are too big and therefore, the world will not let us fail! This is what is coming from the CEO of BBDO Pakistan. That same typical Pakistani mindset. Add to that...nuclear power. This is all that she could think of. She forgets that whole civilizations have fallen apart because of reasons. She forgets that Pakistan can break up into a number of smaller countries. That is a real possibility. She can be a CEO only in Pakistan.

Advertising and Marketing these days hugely rely on data/ numbers either from media buying houses or business analytics. These numbers are often very misleading and at times undermine the complexities of human behavior and interaction patterns. The advertising, and social media marketing industry, needs to learn more empathetic and honest approaches to target audiences instead of forcefully pushing their messages down people's throats which really does not work.
