I am just starting to get into cerakote so your videos are perfect keep up the great work. I am using the cerakote C air cure for now and so far so good.

Figured I'd share my super ghetto diy cerakote setup: For blasting, I bought a giant clear tote from wamart. I cut two holes in the front, glued some pvc flanges in it, then taped some gardening gloves to the insde. Cut another small hole in the side for the air hose to come through. Bought one of those blasting guns with the hopper on top to hold the media. My oven is a 30 year old stove top that I got for $25 at an estate sale. Works for small parts. For big parts, I have to cure them at a lower temp, but for longer. What I do is get a long shipping box. Like 6x6x40" or so. Then I cut a hole in the side on the bottom, and leave the top open. I'll balance that box on the side of the bathtub and put a small heater in front of the hole. Then the part (like a barreled action) gets lowered into the box and hangs on the shower curtain. I turn on the exhaust and shut the door. I've done two barreled actions this way and let them both cure over night. Both turned out perfect. And if someone doesn't want to invest in the media blasting or the spray gun, you can call around to find someone to media blast it for you (and pay). For the spraying you can get a Preval kit on Amazon.

Great video....I’d love to see a a little more detail in future videos on your acetone bath parts soaker as well as your curing oven... love seeing shop fabricated solutions.

Thanks for the suggestions. I definitely plan on making more videos focused on a particular step in the process

I’m currently building curing oven, I fully intend to steal your idea of using 4x4 square tube for acetone bath, brilliant.
@alaskanmancave53014 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrancis303 the tube works great but I wish it were a little bit wider. Its just what I had in the steel pile. If you got 6x6 I think it would work out better

I did my M77 with a couple of differences. 1) I pulled the barrel off of the receiver. 2) I did the outside in E-100 black and the inside of the receiver and the bolt in C-110 Micro Slick
@alaskanmancave53012 жыл бұрын
Pulling the barrel off can make it way easier to get all the oil from bleeding out of the threads. Haven't used the micro slick yet. It's haz-mat and makes it considerably more expensive to get where I live. I heard good things though.

Are you handling the small parts with no gloves on after you removed them from the acetone?
@alaskanmancave530111 ай бұрын
yep, and the coating has never failed. My hands are super dry and after messing with a little acetone there is no oils left on them.

Should the acetone be plugged from going in the barrel???? Thanks

I live on Vancouver Island its like a wetcoast rainforest during hunting season my savage axis has to be dried cleaned and oiled after every rainy hunt would like to extend life of hunting rifle with cerakote i think this will help the life of it for quite a few years
@alaskanmancave5301 Жыл бұрын
My experience with cerakote agrees with extending the useable life of your rifle. Don't use cerakote as an excuse not to clean your gun though.
@robertotto58112 жыл бұрын
So the barrel doesn't need to be separated from the action?
@alaskanmancave5301 Жыл бұрын
no there is no need to remove the action from the barrel. Just make sure it is not weeping any oil before you paint it.

What exactly do you use to degrease and how long does it have to sit there in the tub and then when it comes out of the oven don't wipe it with anything and wash it right Thank you
@peterclark67110 ай бұрын
I use acetone in the tank. I let it sit for at least 1/2 hour. I usually soak them overnight if I can plan it out right. When I pull it out I let it evaporate off then sand blast. After blast I gas out in the oven for 1/2 hour usually at 180degrees.
@Sert-ELOfficial198910 ай бұрын
After degreasing is the Acetone thrown away or can it be used again and if so how many times can it be used Thank you
@alaskanmancave530110 ай бұрын
I reuse it over and over then. I draw it off as needed to clean my paint guns and mixing containers. So it is always circulating through the process till its evaporated.

There should be no Cerakote sprayed in the end of the barrel, the chamber, the action or the bolt lugs. Those are all precision machined surfaces with very tight clearances. My SIL had a rifle Cerakoated for my 12 year old grandson and it was done just like you did this Ruger. The bolt was extremely hard to open/close and it took a lot of effort to move the bolt in/out. I removed the coating from the bolt lugs with a wire wheel and it made it a little easier to operate. I couldn't load any ammo for it because I couldn't get a case far enough into the chamber to measure for headspace or bullet seating. I told him to take it back to the gunsmith that coated it and get it cleaned. The gunsmith (with 40 years of experience he claimed) was furious and told my SIL that I didn't know what I was talking. To prove that I didn't know what I was talking about he loaded a cartridge into the rifle. It got stuck in the chamber😊.

It sounds like whoever applied the cerakote put it on way too thick and didn't plug the barrel. I have had no issues with any of the rifles I have done. I do put a oversized rubber plug in the chamber that keeps most of the paint out of where the bolt lugs seat. When applied properly cerakote only adds .0005-.001. I definately agree that it should never get in the chamber or the end of the barrel.

Grit grade ? Time in oven ?
@alaskanmancave53013 жыл бұрын
I use 100 grit garnet. The bake time is metal temperature 1 hour at 300 degrees.
