Thanks!! Just ordered an $8 atomizer. This afternoon I'll remove the front hub from a well-weathered kiddie bike and make a banding wheel. (I knew there was a reason I kept that piece of 1990's memorabilia. :)

Hey Jim, I recently cam across your channel and loved what you offer. From Nerikomi and Agateware new to both as well as pottery. Still waiting patiently on my own kiln. So for now just gathering ideas and living vicariously thro all of you. thanks for sharing. Also can't wait to try out those salt shakers, thanks for sharing the video on those.. I saw them recently and was intrigued - so you can imagine my excitement when you had them AND shared a video for us - love!!!

Thanks! You can put the sprayed piece on a pedestal or leg, this will allow you to reach the base much easier

Jim, did you clear glaze over underglaze as greenware or underglaze/greenware bisque, THEN did the clear glaze to cone? Nicely done. Think I'll try the atomizer. Nice for small jobs.
@CeramicJim2 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure I underglaze and glazed and bisqueware. I can’t see myself doing anything else as I’ve only done a handful of once firings and I never liked doing heavy coats of underglaze and greenware in case the moisture causes cracks or if I want to restart.

God I wish you were in NYC and could give me private lessons. I hand built mostly and I really need help with throwing and centering!

That’s flattering of you to say. Who knows! Maybe some day our paths will cross.

My ceramic supplier sells atomizers for the leaves of plants. Works fine and you can wear your dust mask at the same time. 10$.

Great idea.. Just wondering.. what are the pro/cons of spraying glaze vs colour slip?
@CeramicJim4 жыл бұрын
Cons for both is that it’s messier and consumes more. Pros is you can blend and it’s very even. You can vary the distance to actually build texture with a glaze. For slips you could just brush them too and it would likely be fine or almost as good but aside from dripping, spraying a glaze is the best way to get an even coat. Or layer thin layers of glaze.

Can use use this by hooking up to a air pump?
@CeramicJim3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don’t see why not. May have to fiddle with the pressure to get it right.
@CeramicJim3 жыл бұрын
I’ve attached it to a bike pump before. It was a hand powered one but it worked.

What is a glaze, what materials are in it? by any chance have you done glaze also, besides clay?
@CeramicJim3 жыл бұрын
There are a variety of materials and every glaze can vary greatly. I make my own glazes.

I've always seen a mask recommended in case you're using airbrush no matter what type of paint you're using, wouldn't the same situation apply here, even though it's literally not feasible due to having to blow? Or maybe the device is too weak to create too many particles floating in the air?
@crimsonarrow2 жыл бұрын
Had this question as well. On top of that I was curious whether or not you could use one of those balloon/hand pumps instead as well.

Are you using a can of compressed air with the atomizer?
@CeramicJim5 жыл бұрын
I haven’t yet. Just human power. A small compressor would definitely make it easier for longer spray sessions.
@CeramicJim5 жыл бұрын
I’m just blowing air very quickly. If it sounds like I’m using a can it’s because I’m building up air in my mouth before I release the pressure built up into the straw.
