Dear Carlos Erban, This is my second viewing of your video, and I must say, I absolutely love it. Your patience in explaining the details really stands out. Many other videos assume viewers are already experts and rush through the content. Your video is a treasure trove of information, delivered at a comfortable, easy-to-follow pace. It's a refreshing change. I'm watching it a second time while experimenting with my camera, and I'm pleased to say that the pace remains perfectly suited for me to follow along and adjust settings on my own camera in real time. I want to express my gratitude for generously sharing your knowledge, time, and effort with us, your viewers. Your dedication is truly appreciated. Karl N.

At 13:04 you change your RAW recording setting from "Lossless compressed" to "Uncompressed". I can tell you that you basically doubled the file sizes of each of your images and you did not improve the quality of the photographs at all. The lossless compression algorithm used by Nikon is just that; lossless. When the image data is reconstructed by any software in order to view or edit the image, there is absolutely no difference in the data that is present. The one reason you might want to shoot uncompressed has to do with speed. Some say the camera (when using a very fast memory card) can move more images per second to the card if there is no need to run a compression algorithm. That's also debatable but, in any case, I thought you might like to know why your pictures went from 42 megs per shot to 70 megs per shot with no change in quality.

Thanks for the explaination/observation. After I started watching this video, I realized that Carlos was making some decisions based on "what he heard" not on research.
@CarlosErban10 жыл бұрын
Rick Valasek Scot White Scott: thanks for your explanation. I really appreciated it. Rick: after reading your comments, I did some more research. I was a disappointed that Nikon does not provide a good or virtually any explanation. After spending a couple of hours reading many forums and opinions, the vast majority agree with Scott, there is no difference between the two settings. Nikon says "virtually" no difference. I think if burst speed and memory size is an issue, I would definitely use lossless compressed. Prof. sports journalist photographers shoot jpg for this reason. However, if shooting landscapes, macros, product shots, headshots, or portraits, I would still prefer the uncompressed option even if there is "virtually" no difference, which is what I mostly use my D800.

Scot White can the smaller Lossless compressed files still be edited in lightroom? Also what setiing depicks Lossless in the setings menu? i remember only seeing file Type =NeF and or? =dont remember Seeing a choice labled as " Lossless compressed "? or maybe there is and i just forgot? iv neglecting my D800 in the closet the rainy season of seattle now i'll almost have to get to know it all over again :/ :-

chevypowertogo The d800 is set by default to the lossless compression setting, so you don't need to go switch over to it.But you can see were the setting is in the video here at 13.04. Yes, all of the formats are editable in lightroom.

its primary function is to lock camera exposure and/or focus, instead of having your camera re-evaluate the light every time you recompose If you are using any of the camera modes like Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority. There are many cases where using this feature is very helpful. One example is when you photograph panoramas. It is extremely important to use exactly the same exposure from frame to frame in panoramic photography. Hope this may help you

Thank you for a very helpful video. Just one question ...On the D800 is it possible to shoot in Automatic ? For example, on a D90 camera you can turn the dial on the top of the camera to 'A' and it will shoot automatic. Is the D800 enabled to do this ? Thank you Carlos .
@Youtubesux22009 жыл бұрын
You Say around 4:05 that bracketing only goes in only one stop measure. That is incorrect, you can turn the sub dial clockwise to adjust the exposure. Just wanted to point that out.
@CarlosErban8 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right for less than 1 stop, what I meant is that you cannot set to 3 shots with 2 stop differences you have to shoot 5 shots 1 stop differences

@CarlosErban8 жыл бұрын

hello have try followed the setting but my problem is when i take a shot and when i zoom its doesnt look nice and sharpen pls kindly help out thanks
@CarlosErban8 жыл бұрын
It could be an issue with the lens, focus, or depth of field. Go to a place with good light, set your camera in aperture priority, aperture at f 8, ISO 400, so your shutter speed is at least 1/125 or higher. Set single point focus, point in the middle, then shoot at a packaged product such soda or anything with text. If it is sharp, then there is nothing wrong with your camera. It could be how your autofocus or depth of field when you are shooting wide f 2.8 or lower. Also, don't full zoom. For example, if your lens is 70-300, go up to 275 and compare vs. 300 mm. Some lenses are not sharp at full zoom. Finally it could be motion blur, try shooting with shutter speed of at least 1/125, if zoomed at 250 mm, then try 1/250 sec (1 over the zoomed)

Thanks very much for this review, caveman people like me appreciate it very much. I've got few questions, I'm kind of lost and I really could use some advice. I've got a Nikon D800 and I'm planning to shoot a low light music video, I want to use slow motion for some of the images so ideally I guess 1920x1080 60fps will be ideal. Does this camera have this option? If not, which one would you recommend me? I've watch few tutorials about it and apparently every time you change your image area settings (FX, 1.2X, DX or 5:4), you should have new options for frame size in movie settings but that's not the case on my camera, I always have the same options ( 1920x1080 30fps to 1080x 720 25fps). No matter which crop option I use, my frame size options does not give me any extras ones as I've seen on other videos. Someone told me I may have some settings activated that may been causing the options not to appear, any ideas? Thanks for your time! ... and I apologies for my bad english. Thanks again!.

Thank you for posting this, Carlos. This is the first time I've seen something informative on the information panel on the back. I have a couple questions please. First, is it possible to flip up the back viewer so that you can look down at it from above, and compose the image while holding the camera down near your waist, like on a Rolliflex? Second, is there a way to create double exposures with the D800?
