Here's an interesting (And TRUE) story for you and your viewers. I was one of the "Test-Children" for the cereal before it came out. I grew up in Mpls, MN. and General Mills sent people out to grade schools and taste tested 3 different versions of the cereal on kids before deciding on a final version. We sat at a table with 3 bowls and a glass of water. A man and lady with clip boards had us take a sip of water and then eat a few spoons from the first bowl. Then drink water and try the 2nd one. Same with the 3rd one. We were permitted to go back and forth until we had a firm opinion of all 3. I remember it well...One was only slightly Chocolate flavored. (I didn't like it.) One was REALLY dark and way to sweet and Chocolate flavored. The last one was right between the other two and was perfect. Not too sweet or too bland. I picked that one. I was upset and shocked when the tester guy made me try the sweeter dark one again and try to force me to pick that one. I told him firmly...I DON'T LIKE IT. - It's too sweet. He said "I thought kids liked Chocolate? -The more the better". I asked him "What's the point of asking our opinion if your going to force us to pick one? "I told you which one tastes the best to me." My teacher was proud at me for sticking up for myself. They collected the test data from all the kids and then left. Months went by and I was helping my mom get groceries when we saw Count Chocula on the shelf. I screamed "THERE IT IS ". When we tried it at home...I was thrilled to find out it was the exact same flavor that I picked ! - As a kid, I really felt like I was responsible for helping pick the final exact flavor. I ate a lot of Count Chocula as a kid. I always felt like it was MY cereal. :-)

Wow! That’s such a cool story. Thank for sharing! And I’m glad you stuck to your guns. Good call! I wish they’d listen to consumers now and go back to the original oat recipe.

Hi, I came up with the characters for Count Chocula and Frankenberry, and we were definitely NOT given any orders from General Mills to come up with monster-based cereals. All they wanted from us were two characters, one for chocolate, one for strawberry. I came up with a list of potential character duos, and my wonderful, funny boss Tony Jaffe, chose Count Chocula and Frankenberry. Sincerely, Laura Levine Lacter

Its cool that they still make these once a year -- however the original cereal was made from oat flour and today's version is made from very airy puffed corn flour... definitely not as good. :/

The original Franken Berry was one of the top cereals and was made with oat flour. Today's version tastes nothing like it. In addition, during the era of the original monster cereals, there was a condition called "Franken Berry Stool" which turned kids' poop pink. Cereals from the past century generally tasted better than today's.

Yeah the originals had way more flavor, the texture was kind of the same that Lucky Charms has. And I'm probably making it up but I swear the marbits were better when they were the same color as the cereal too.

I remember going on Franken Berry benders back in 1973 and getting sick afterwards. These rehashed versions today don't hold a candle to the original formulas. If you like the redone versions, power to you, just my opinion.

Franken Berry cereal is good. I wonder why grocery stores stopped selling Franken Berry? I don't like Count Chocula cereal.

The reason why the Monster Cereals are only on Halloween, it's because General Mills wanted to prevent the sales of the cereals from declining that would lead to discontinuations.

I got a kick out of your reaction to the taste of 20-year-old Count Chocula. I've have that reaction to new Count Chocula or any other sugar cereal. I know that gummy candies are unhealthy, but I find them to be insanely addictive and quit buying them (Twizzlers, gummy bears, gummy worms, etc.) for this reason a few years ago. I wonder if the secret ingredient is crack. I'm not surprised that the 20-year-old gummy candy didn't go bad, because it's not real food. Maybe the bacteria and molds are smarter than we are. At least they know better than to eat that stuff. :)

+Gabe Fonseca No point when nothing much has changed. Wanted to say that I was extremely upset that yet again they didn't bring back Yummy Mummy or Fruit Brute. mainly more upset about the Yummy Mummy because it's my favorite. Guess it was a one-time thing. Hopefully I'm not the only consumer who was upset by this. Wait another year and see if they bring them back again.

Anybody watching this please know the recipe is no longer the same. It's only the name is the same. It's made with cheap corn instead of oats as it did when we had it as kids. Stick it to them where it hurts, in their wallet. Don't buy this crap. It tastes horrible now.
