The Doors recorded and released “Hello, I Love You” in 1968. The only hint that it was about a black girl is the “dusky jewel” line. In 1969, The Stones recorded “Brown Sugar”, released as a single in 1971. “Brown Sugar” is the most overtly sexual song about a black girl imaginable. It must have caused shock waves. If The Doors tapped on that door, The Stones smashed it to smithereens! Great interview, Professor!

When I was 18 years old ‘Schools Out Forever’ was a reality for me, at least until my 30’s when I went to college. I spent a winter in Phx and lived close to Camelback HS. when 20 years old. During that era he was my favorite singer and showman but Gilmour was and still is my favorite guitar player that started after experiencing PF in concert (1973). I thought this was going to be about "Elenore" by the Turtles; they wrote that song as a protest against their management's demands for a catchy love song, and, it, too was a big hit. But I had heard Doors members calling "Hello, I Love You" as the "bubblegum track" of the album, and it's easy to imagine Ohio Express or 1910 Fruitgum Company having a hit with it. But the Doors gave it that sinister tint that would be a bit out of character for a bubblegum group. I don't think they had anything to be ashamed of.

A band that started in the 70s in Saskatchewan moved to Winnipeg with a solid debut album “Meanwhile Back in Paris” - Streetheart had one of the best vocalists for the time . Kenny Shields with great harmony and back up vocals from keyboardist Darryl Guetheil . Two members went on to form Loverboy but Kenny and Streetheart were a Western Canada staple on rock radio. Check out Action and Pressure or Hollywood from Under Heaven Over Hell. Their sophomore album. Also their cover of Under My Thumb impressed Mick and Keith so much they acknowledged the cover as the best they had heard when Streetheart reinvented the song

Much as I love the Beatles, the idea of having Paul McCartney fronting the Doors Garners the immediate response - "NOO! NOO! GOD! NOO!" After that Moody Deep voice of Jim Morrison, Having Paul's Mid -to-high range warble would not have fit their style. Can you imagine Paul doing their back catalogue in concert. "Riders on the Storm"? "Knock On Wood"? "Horse Lattitudes"? He would be laughed off the stage. So yes it was probably(?) best that he was not invited to join. It was a daft idea, anyway.

@@ProfessorofRockDefinitely! I was lucky enough to see Robbie in a small venue several years ago. I regret missing a backstage meet-and-greet with Robbie because I had to pick up my wife from the movies. 🤦🏻 It was late and I didn't want her to be alone. She was new to So Cal at the time...

After something like The Beatles, I can't imagine McCartney joining someone else's pre-existing band. McCartney wanted a lot of control over how his songs were produced. It was hard enough for him to have to negotiate with 3 other guys he'd known for years, how would he do that with another band that he didn't found? None of the other ex-Beatles joined other bands. It's basically impossible to do when you were already in the greatest band of all time.

I remember when I was around 16 years old and I was just getting into the Kinks. My fave song of the moment was All Day And All Of The Night and I walked into the high school library singing, "Dah Duh. Dah Duuh. Dah Dadda Dah Duh" and one of the guys in my class replied with, "Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name?" Guess you had to be there :P

I was a child of the late 60's and early 70's, which IMHO was probably the greatest period in Rock & Roll history. That said, I never really connected with the music of the Doors. Call me a heretic, but I remember when "Light My Fire" first debuted on top 40 AM radio in Chicago, and I absolutely hated that song, and I still do. In fact, the only Doors song that I really liked was "Love Me Two Times". Now THAT was a great song!

I have a mate who's mother saw them live in the late 60's on Venice Beach. Her brain has never been the same, I spent last Christmas with her. I think the LSD back then was just way too strong.

"Hello, I Love You" isn't a dumb or shallow song at all! It's got that great line (that reveals so much): "Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?" That's poetry! And Adam Ant's cover of it, complete with brass horn section, is mind-bendingly good. Even when he was "bad", Jim Morrison was awesome and a cut above the rest.
