Ceres - Board Game Review - More Victory Points, Less Bugs
Ceres is a 1-4 Sci-Fi worker placement game where players take the role of an Asteroid Mining Corporation in the near future and try to outplay their opponents and rule Ceres!
The game consists of 3 rounds that represent 3 years in Ceres and the respective full business cycles of the corporations. Players can choose among a variety of actions including launching mining probes to the Asteroid Belt, trading raw materials, constructing and upgrading their core facilities as well as expanding the colony of Ceres, improving their technology through research and liaising with the Mars council in order to exploit their power even more!
Ceres has been co-developed with an astrophysicist for the best possible thematic applications and brings a couple of innovative twists to the worker placement genre!

played it with game group, it was a hit, yes generic theme, but easy to learn rules, a slight step up from architects of the west kingdom, stone age, lords of water deep but with a more engaging theme for sci fi fans rather than medieval europe or the past in any form. mars gives it a leg up. definitely not heavy but allows casual play with a fun time that many people can understand and have fun.. some fiddly rules but all in all probably will come out in various game groups more often

It's probably on par with the likes of Architects level wise, those other two are even lighter. Glad it was a hit though!

That was a great review, thanks for the clear description without getting bogged down in the details. The only thing that confused me was the comment that the 4 player version may take a long time. For myself and my group of friends, if we play a game that has a significant amount of set-up time, as this appears to have, we want to get at least 2-3 hours of playing time out of it. Something that is 90 minutes or less, better have near zero set-up time, like Citadels.

Will watch with interest, as I was very tempted to back this, but I got a little cold feet after having seen issues with a prior crowdfunding campaign by them. In such instances I still tend to keep tabs on the project, so if it does land ok, I can still consider a 2nd hand copy (or retail if it makes it there)

One play last night, I agree with your commentary. We all liked it very much, but I found it lacking some depth. Especially some sort of endgame scoring to work towards and provide some tension. As it is, 99% of the points are scored in game... And yeah, total table hog (I need to stop buying games and get a table), and I cannot fit more than 3P around it. I ordered the Mars Contracts expansion and hope that extra dimension gives it the extra depth I'm looking for (even if it's not endgame scoring) -- and that I can fit it on the table!

What’s the max amount of time you can use those clips from movies TV shows without getting a copyright flag? five seconds or less?
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 8 ай бұрын
It varies and certainly cut edits help but five seconds is a good benchmark.

I like space/futuristic themes. Midway is another plus. But table hog put me off. I would like to be able to play it on my coffee table. How does it compare with anachrony?

Linking into your comments about AP / ramping up the length / complexity, how much risk does this game have of a player planning their next move and then having to come up with something completely different because of the action of the player preceding them? ~ 10% of the time, and players still seem to see the value in planning their next move, after completing their previous one, but if it creeps up to (say) 20% or more, I see a greater likelihood they'll disengage brain until their turn actually starts... with a significant increase in turn length. In short, were there many times you had to completely re-plan a turn, because (for instance) the action you'd planned was blocked, and there wasn't an obvious secondary option?
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 8 ай бұрын
Rarely did I have to completely replan a turn. Worse case scenario someone kicks the building I wanted

Its a shame that this is from Artipia games for me. I refused to have anything to do with this game after how poorly they handled the kickstarter for the pursuit of happiness. They lied so much to the backers during that campaign and then launched this game in the middle of all of it. I’m shocked they ever delivered either game.

Those issues were certainly enough to put me off backing on KS. That said, I kept an eye on it, and resolved to see what it was like when (and if) it landed.

The game was nice BUT the bot is way to easy to beat. In my second game I crushed the hardest bot by 50 points. My wife is not interested in space theme so it had to go after 5 wins again the hardest bot.
