@ThePrint How did the astronomers and planetary scientists figure out the internal structure of Ceres and Vesta?
@ThePrintIndia4 жыл бұрын
Spacecraft like Dawn and Juno (currently orbiting Jupiter) have gravity instruments on board that are sensitive to very tiny changes in gravitational pull. As the spacecraft orbit these bodies, they can measure minute variations in gravitational pull caused by variations in the planet's structure. These small changed can be measured and the internal composition deduced, with the help of data from other instruments also such as surface mineral mapper, of course.~ SR

Since earth's moon is slowly drifting away, at some point in time, the centre of moon and earth will be outside the system, making them binary system, does that mean they will be considered as dwarf planets by then?

No, but the Earth will wobble a little bit due to the Moon's passage. We see this for transits of exoplanets around their parent stars.

There must be some mistake in the presentation. The asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Ceres and Vesta are very large asteroids then how can Ceres lie in the orbit of Neptune since Neptune is further away from Jupiter. Both of them are smaller than our moon. However, the presentation was interesting
@BAbhijeet4 жыл бұрын
Nope...she is right. She said Ceres is the largest asteroid within the orbit of Neptune...so it is in asteroid belt which exist between Mars and Jupiter. She had to mention "within Neptune's orbit" because there is another asteroid belt which exists beyond Neptune's orbit called Kuiper belt which is within our solar system.
@kaypee91874 жыл бұрын
@@BAbhijeet Please see a video by NASA's Dawn Space Mission director about the exploration of the Dwarf planets Ceres and Vesta in the Astroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is very informative. The mission to Pluto and beyond was called as New Horizon Space Mission. Currently, it is in the Kuiper Belt which lies beyond the Dwarf Planet Pluto.
