when you cut the material at the corners, did you leave any allowance or did you cut it flush with the box?
@Ceropegia9 жыл бұрын
***** I am assuming you are asking about the top edge of the box; once you make the miter cut and open the fabric you will see where the the cuts fall. You trim to the miter cut, the cover material has its own thickness and the cuts hardly ever fall flush with the box, when the cover material is glued and turned into place it all fits as it should.
@janhulse9518 Жыл бұрын
is it just an ordinary triangle one can purchase anywhere! and are you holding it flush with the edge to make the slits?
@Ceropegia Жыл бұрын
The triangle is a tool I make, you can get one in my ETSY store SageArt. The orange bar is set so you can make flaps for box covering by setting it at the edge of the small open space, or use the visual width of the bar to cut flaps. Thanks for watching.

My friend makes decorative wooden boxes and was wondering how to cut leather exactly to fit inside the lids. The boxes have a somewhat complex shape and he was wondering how to make a pattern of it to cut the leather insert to fit perfectly. Do you have any suggestions? The work you do is very high quality! Thanks for the vids.
@Ceropegia5 жыл бұрын
Since the boxes have a complex shape, what I would do is take a piece of malleable paper, (oriental, tissue) cut a rough larger than the top and then press it into the top to be lined. Then press the paper into all of the edges of the inside of the box top, going up the sides/walls is not important, only the flat area of the top that is to be lined. Then, once the paper is removed, you have a pattern of what is essentially to be covered. I would then cut a thin cardboard to fit the space exactly, if the leather is thick it should be pared so that the cardboard can be covered and the leather wrapping around the edges of the liner cardboard. The cardboard may have to be trimmed a little to accommodate the thickness of the leather. I am assuming that the inside sides of the top are not to be covered, if they are, the walls should be covered first so that the leather fills/crosses the edge of the join. That way when the lining is inserted and glued into place there is a continuous effect of the leather lining. Not seeing the box, I can only guess at the problem and this is the way I would start for an odd shaped box. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Sometimes you can ask for sheets for to make samples, but I always did that on the phone with a person. My second suggestion is to ask someone at Skivertex if they have a list of retailers and try to find one in your area. This "freehand" method is actually more difficult to do than just drawing out the die lines on a computer, then laying the printout over the materials and cutting them. That's how I would do it for prototyping at my factory, neat, precise, and complete. No guesswork, no bizarre master handicraft intuition needed, just using computer precisions to help out.
@Ceropegia3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are probably making hundreds of boxes by machine. None of this is bizarre, just hand craft, tempered by years of serving smaller clients. Thanks for watching.
@avcomth3 жыл бұрын
@@Ceropegia Hi, meant no disrespect at all. It's just that you're so good at freehandling that I highly doubt your audience is going to be able to do the same very easily, at least in the short time span of watching this clip. I did see how you pieces together the grayboard frame from seprate pieces to achieve sharp 90 degree corners, that's just high quality work and attention to details---I just use the grooving machines to do the same lazily then use box cutter to etch out the corner pieces. From my experience being involved with rigid boxes at my printing press, the real pros in factories will prototype their boxes freehand just like you. It's just that I couldn't bring myself to achieve the same level of sharpness as you do, so I had to rely on diecutting lines plotout, but this does comes at great advantage because of reproducibility. I also have intimate knowledge about boxes and dies drawing and making and have developed my own formula for sketching out the rigid box cover sheets which is the most difficult part of rigid boxes, especially when you have to run it through automatic machines.

How do you measure for the exact amount of material to use when covering a box?
@Ceropegia8 жыл бұрын
+Kristi Davis The width of the covering material is approximately 2 and a half times the height of the box when you are covering it like this with the insides matching the outside. ( If the box is really tall you don't need 2 and a half times the height, adding a generous inch will suffice). The length is the circumference of the box plus a half inch (7-10mm). If you are only covering the outside, you need a width of the height of the box plus about 1 inch (25mm). All of this is covered in my other box videos. This video was made to show another method of covering after the other box videos were made and I assumed viewers would have already seen the basic box videos. Thanks for watching!
@Actionfiguresarefun4 жыл бұрын
Would it be the same process to cover the outside of a box in velvet?
@Ceropegia4 жыл бұрын
Velvet is a different material, the velvet should be paper backed unless you are making a padded box, then the work would be more like covering a chair. The difficulty is always at the seams/corners. Folding edges on the outside and tacking it down on the inside the box. Without folding the edges the velvet will always fray, velvet boxes like those for jewelry are almost always flocked. Thanks for watching.

This was a most excellent instructional video, and should translate well to my slightly different material use ... thank you so much!! Question: how did you measure to get that perfect sized piece of the original one piece wrap?
@Ceropegia3 жыл бұрын
Andre, I measure the depth of the box and add material for the flaps (1.75"), inside and out; I roll the box next to a tape measure or ruler to get the length . ( example - depth =3" so I cut material 7.5" wide and the length 22" plus an inch and a half or so to cut off once the sides are covered. the covering material is folded in half lengthwise and the fold is where the open side of the box is placed as you see in the video.) This is similar to the technique I use to cover the pieces of the clam shell box but different cutting for the open side of each of the nesting pieces. Thanks for watching.
