Cerro Gordo Ghost Town

Exploring a REALLY cool old ghost town, way up at 9,000 feet in the Inyo Mountains...which used to be managed by the most AMAZING beautiful blonde caretaker with a FASCINATING past!

Brent Underwood is the owner of Cerro Gordo ! He made a lot of good friends out of that part of the country. ! He started with the bunk house out the back and restored that ! When he started work on the Hotel he had a friend that was a trucker come earth works dude ,whom brought all this earth moving equipment up on the gnarley road and probably improved it too ! He has done a hell of a lot of good work there ! He said there was an old guy that lived down the road that he had to keep in good with in preserving the town - that is probably the caretaker ! Just goes to show that not all youngsters are out to graffiti and mess up old areas of history !

I'm so glad that WH did this video. I've never been up there. All the wiring should have been replaced in these old buildings. I lost one of my old trailers due to old wiring.

This place was constantly occupied by at least a caretaker. There never was a problem before. In one video, the guy who lives there talked about a "ghost" in the old bunkhouse. He showed how he put a padlock on the door and still saw lights on inside the building. What he didn't talk about is the fact there was more than one entrance Not to mention, could the windows be opened? In an old building like that, the likely answer is yes. There could have been someone squatting on the premises in more than one building, so it may or may not have been wiring. Investigators tend to go with the path of least resistance, which in this case would be to blame the wiring.

Thanks for the video on Cerro Gordo. Years ago I rode a motorcycle through. Met Jody. She showed us around her house and the hotel. She spoke fondly of her plans to restore the town. She wanted to have room for business conferences and a Bed and Breakfast. She did mention the special hydrolic water pump used to bring water up from the deep levels of the mine. Amazingly wonderful and instantly friendly woman.

WH, loved it. You just keep getting better. As an old desert rat I say, you bring life to the desert by bringing the story of the life of the desert to people. Best part of this video was learning about the ghostess of the town. What a woman, I am going to have to learn more about her. When I used to drive through the desert with people who did not live there, they would say that they saw no life and it was barren. I would tell them that there was life all around, it just moved slower and was less flashy. Sometimes I would tell them how to find water in the desert, just follow the life. To see the desert life one needs to slow down their own speed and pay attention. I think you know that. The desert calms my soul. It moves slow but with intent. You see the desert and respect it's life. I like that about you. How do people find life on the fringe? Desert people seek to be themselves, they seek separation to achieve self awareness and purification in a manner. I think the mountain men were the same way, just different environments. Desert rats don't fear solitary confinement, they fear the confinement of conformity. The desert is where you go to be you for only the strong of mind can survive it. I have travelled these deserts longer than you have been alive. Lots of great stories and feelings. I also know where not to go. If you are driving 50 miles on a dirt road from one highway to another and you see a compound with barb wire or watch posts, don't go there. The desert can spring artists (Georgia O'Keefe) or maniacs (Manson). Old fatherly type guy says, always wear you hiking shoes and always bring that electric walking stick. Be a good boy scout, young lady and always be prepared. I want to keep seeing your videos. Never take the desert for granted. If I drive from LA to Vegas I keep a couple of gallons of water in my car. Not for me, for others. You know the desert, maybe you could tell people who don't how to prepare to be in it. I won't camp with newbies anymore; but, I would camp with you. You get the desert, many don't and make bad mistakes. I am gonna shut up now, thanks for the video and get ready for having more viewers because you will.

Used to do a lot of seasonal construction work in the Bishop/Mammoth area and on the way home one day, a co- worker and I decided to check out the fat hill unannounced. Upon arrival we were met by Jody with a shotgun in her arms and a stern look in her eyes...LOL But After sizing us up and determining we were harmless, she then proceeded to give us an awesome tour of the place. She said if Mike was around he would have taken us for a ride down into the mine if we had wanted...Dayum! Opportunity missed. Real nice folks and kudos to them for preserving this priceless piece of history.

As soon as you walked into the hotel I saw the name Mike Patterson and went into research mode. Found out that he and his wife, Jody, were major players up there in Cerro Gordo. Mike died before the chapel was finished and volunteers and friends finished it in his honor. It must of been heartbreaking to have survived his wife by 8 years. Jody in ‘01 and Mike in ‘09. Wish you showed that stove in the bar in more detail. Guess we should give out a big holler to the new shot caller, Brent Underwood!

I love old history. The reason why old photo subjects had expressionless faces is because it looked respectful. A smile or grin was seen as not 'dealing with a full deck'. That's what I always understood. Folks though differently back then. (13:46). Good cam work and narration here.

Ah, man seeing the American Hotel before Brent purchased it and it burned down is priceless. He will rebuild and you had no clue what a treasure this vlog would become in 2020 and over the rebuilding in 2021. So many treasures were there. The wall paper was so nice. I can't believe you made it up that grade. I can't believe WE made it up that grade. When I researched prior to our trip, one of the things I came across was "You'll know you're almost there because the road gets quite steep." I must of said "Oh my god. We must be almost there..." At least 10 times. My biggest regret was only spending a day there. So many amazing memories. Thank you for the video. I left a piece of my heart up there and it was really nice to visit it.

Went to Cerro Gordo in 1974/75 with my then brother in law. From what I learned there was also a house of ill repute somewhere up there. I you go down the back road, there are, or at least, were some really cool old cabins with mine shafts in the floor so people could guard them to keep poachers away from their claims. Loved seeing your videos on places that we used to haunt when we were younger. Still have a Jeep and still go for the hard to find things, thanks.

Ghost Adventures just filmed an episode at Cerro Gordo. The Poker Room is haunted by a man named Alphonse Benoit who was shot and killed while playing poker. You saw the bullet hole and his blood stains there. The mine is haunted by as it was the sight of a cave in that supposedly killed 35 Chinese miners and the Balfor House is also haunted by 2 children who died there. You can view the episode on the Travel Channel or KZbin. I was stationed at Edwards AFB in the early 1980s and my friends and I used to go exploring where ever we could. We found many abandoned homesteads, aircraft and other interesting sights. Love your videos and know the hard work and effort you go through to make them possible. Maybe one day you can make it here to Saudi Arabia and I can take you out to explore the various sights here.

I am subscribed to the KZbin channel "Ghost Town Living" by the bloke who used his life savings to buy Cerro Gordo. He was in tears when the American Hotel burned down & is trying to raise money to rebuild it. The painting of the woman in the hotel bar was once naked & hung in a Nevada brothel. Billy Crapo's home, next door to the hotel , from where he killed Henry Boland & wounded his brother Thomas. This was 60 feet from Crapo's house and not in the hotel playing cards. Crapo escaped & was never seen again so the $500 reward never claimed.

My heart breaks watching this knowing the old hotel burned down. All those treasures lost 😢 You should so go back & share this with Brent for historical value to aid him in his rebuilding of the hotel. My grandpa passed 2 months to the day after my grandma. The last set of twins born in my family resulted in the loss of one twin shortly after birth...the other twin was quite healthy yet passed 6 months later due to a broken heart. Broken heartstrings are very deadly.... I bet he would never have wanted to live in that ghost town without his other half, he would have been miserable.

Sarah, There was an ore tram from the mine just above the town that went down to the ore bin you past lower down the mountain on the way up. There is one of the ore buckets in front of the hotel. Great video, it's so rare to have such an intact ghost town that's not vandalized. Please more singing.

I actually stayed in that bunk house with a group of coworkers back sometime before 2003 and it was very nice. Hopefully they will be able to open it for lodging again soon. There was also still a bucket dangling high in the air from the salt tram if you knew where to look during the drive up. Great to see Cerro Gordo again. Thanks!

Really enyoy you and your vidios. Been going to cerro gordo sence the 80's neat place, Have the care taker tell you about the miner's who would go to Keeler and party and jump in the ore buckets to go back up to the mines and forget to duck when they went by one of the tram poles and get their neck broke or their head removed. Haven't been there sence the early 90's they've done a nice job on the American hotel met the lady who owned it once she was very nice.

Very neat town. Love the artifacts they have. Wouldn't mind having some. Looks like fun to explore. When I was in New Mexico a few years ago, I went to a number of ghost towns, some had residents living there. Not ghosts. Most were south of Santa Fe.

I'm glad you shared this video of the hotel - what a beautiful building it was. Interesting how they just put wiring in exposed like that but that was long before electrical code and was the downfall of the property. I hope they're able to rebuild it as he wishes to.
