Out of nowhere? Not at all. In FFV, when you fight Gilgamesh, he brags that he just bought an awesome sword that he's going to use against you. He hits you with it a couple times, only to say something along the lines "What is this? I've been scammed." and he throws the sword at you and flees. After the fight, you can inspect the item, which is aptly named "Excalipoor". It got a good chuckle out of me back in the day.
