The lockup clutch spline fits into a spline on the turbine. In other words, the lockup clutch is splined/locked onto the turbine . . . it is not locked onto the stator. This can easily be seen starting at about 1:47 of the video. The lockup clutch (w/turbine) will then "lock on" to the torque converter housing when "lock up" occurs. Great video . . . . really enjoyed it but I thought that I should straighten out this minor point of possible confusion for students. Thank you . . . .

Very good explanation. Question: What causes torque converter shudder? I rebuilt my 4L60E after my pump smashed-up at 175,000 miles. Long story short, complete rebuild kit installed, rebuilt pump and remanufactured TC, Transgo shift kit in valve body, new separator plate and gaskets, new EPC. I'm experiencing erratic line pressure and shuddering at all shifts and have to drive in 3rd because 4th is so shaky. My transmission mechanic drove it with the Scantool connected and said the fluid temp is too high ~180 degrees and a lot of knocking and electrical noise at the engine. The Transgo tech suggests replacing the new EPC and filter with OEM. I don't want to keep throwing parts at this problem and nobody seems to really know why the pressure is erratic and the shuddering is present. My current theory is that when my old pump cato'd it pumped metal fragments through the input shaft to the TC and maybe the input shaft is still fouled and preventing full flow. Thus the erratic pressure, high fluid temperature, and poor TC performance (shuddering). Thoughts?

Question even though this converter video, but what are typical cooling line pressures? The fluid from the spinning pump send some of the fluid out thru shaft holes, into the pump, then holes in the case send fluid out around 10 - 15 PSI as I have understood. The guy on the dyno have probably forgot or had a line come off, so they may have info on that. The pump pushes fluid thru the TCC valve train into the converter. With an open check ball in the turbine shaft, returns heated fluid back thru the release side of this valve train, out to the cooler. The 4L60 return fluid, now cooled, returns and is directed into the lubrication circuit for the carriers gears, bearings and other parts in the lube circuit to cup plugs with tiny holes to spray fluid onto hard to reach parts, like the tail shaft bushing, speedo gears if equipped and others. Wish the word “Torque Multiplication” where Thrown in there as well. Good video! Forget the old people who don’t like background music. They prefer Opera or Oprah instead. Thanks!

@jgizzy the torque converter clutch locks when the pcm commands fluid to stop flowing through the input shaft causing the clutch plate to build friction against the torque converter cover and lock up the whole assembly making a 1:1 ratio

Awesome video I have not seen anyone explain this better. I finally know how the fluid control engages the lockup clutch. I have a question if the fluid coming from the center of the shaft keeps the clutch away from the rear cover...what force is pushing the clutch against the rear cover when the lock up is engaged.

awesome tutorial..........but just one question.........did you by any chance switch the Pump (impeller) and the Turbine in the explanation???? I ask this because I always thought the Impeller was on the engine side of the torque converter and the turbine on the transmission side and not like you have shown.........a quick response would be awesome :)
@Shtoops27
@Shtoops27 10 жыл бұрын
he forgot the stators other purpose which is the reason why its on a one way clutch. When the transmission speed matches the engine speed the fluid from the impella flows the same direction as the turbine, therefor the stators clutch is not needed and the stator spins freely

great video. So I'm working on my daughters 2011 Kia Sorento, all the symptoms point to a bad torque converter, only question I have is the fluid looks pretty good and i don't see any metal. I have the transmission out. I've seen a couple of videos online where they say a quick check is to put your fingers in and see if the stator moves both ways or just one way. Near as I can tell looking down into the converter the first set of splines is the stator (but not 100% sure) and then there is a set at the bottom, the splines that are the closest as you look into it move both ways, the bottom one I can't get enough leverage to move it, I had a couple of other converters sitting around and tried it with them and the upper spline on those only turns one way. I ordered a torque converter and it came today and I immediately check it and the upper spline turns both ways just like the old one so now I'm not sure. Ever have a bad torque converter without seeing metal particles and what about this rotating the splines to check it because the one I just got and the old one seem to be the same. The symptoms she was having is very very slow acceleration and low power, especially on a hill, in full automatic mode it only shifts into 2nd and then doesn't shift at all but shifts fine in manual mode just doesn't seem to have any power. Fuel pressure, compression, everything else checks out good. A friend who was the service manager at a Kia dealer and was a transmission guy said it very possibly could be the torque converter and for some reason was locking up but he was not totally definitive.

I think mine is shot, the problem started with a small leak....but a major leak when the car was parked, it also made weird noises when In reverse or drive....the noise would go away when I’m neutral....I removed the transmission and checked the torc converter. Do the stator gear” inside the torc converter” suppose to spin in both directions ? Mine does....one way makes a nasty squeaking noise....I found no debris inside the transmission” because I stopped driving it soon as I seen the leaks and sounds....I purchased a new torc converter and seal. But I want to make sure the torc converter is the issue.

What happens if you can tap into the lock up clutch solenoid so that you can keep it switched on permanently. Would I still be able to change gears and would the car be able to get out of gear i.e. neutral ? Thank you for the great video very interesting !!
@Burban12
@Burban12 6 жыл бұрын
Ultimate there’d be no benefits to that. You could just run full manual valve body and not have to switch to neutral consistently. If the transmission was in lock up 24/7 you might as well buy a manual. You couldn’t benefit from slip like running a 3600 stall converter. You can floor it and it just take off around 3600 rpm.

Michael Capranica Thanks Michael, I had a gm5l40e which came up torque converter fault dropped the pan and saw metal particles obviously lock up clutch failed and slipping. To fix the problem I disconnected the lock up solenoid and connected a separate lock up solenoid to the joiner to mimic the resistance. Car driving fine i'm not using the lock up clutch any more just using tourque converter hope it lasts have you ever heard of this before done ? Thanks
@Burban12
@Burban12 6 жыл бұрын
Ultimate yeah actually that’s how they all used to be. Lock up came out to increase mpg and decrease heat in the transmission. If you’re running without lock up I’d strong suggest a transmission cooler and guage because the transmission would be consistently slipping and slip causes more heat. And of course heat equals faster break down time of parts
