Hi Cesar, my husky is very protective of toys but with other dogs, he steals toys from other dogs and doesn’t give them back. He once got into a fight because the other dog was trying to get his toy back. Any advice?

I grew up having dogs over many years. We learned to make sure the dogs became submissive when it comes to their food by getting between the dog and their food when they were 'puppies'. And, by taking it away from them often at first so that they would not protect it. It has never failed us.

This is not going to work with all breeds and is a very old school method. Many trainers say NOT to do this. What kind of dogs do you have?

Yep same, you should be able to put your hands in the dish from a puppy on and they won’t eat, they’ll just stop and wait

@@StifMiesterGI’ve never been bitten or growled at, but than again I started it from meal one, puppy age, maybe 4-5 months the oldest so it never happened, I had one that was displeased at first but that’s all You have to do it with certainty like Caesar says, not scared hand shaking and expecting it, you expect it than it’s more likely to happen He should learn it’s his meal when you move your hand, when you block it it’s yours You don’t have to take it away, just block them If your too worried to get bitten you can just stand over it, dish and block them to start, same effect

Perfect timing in publishing this video. I adopted a shelter dog 3 weeks ago and yesterday she bit THROUGH my hand because I tried to take a metal food can away from her that she'd stolen from the garbage can. I'm not giving up on her, and once my hand is healed, I'm going to try this (even though she's not a puppy). Thank you for this!

Thanks for confirming that training a dog when they're a pup to respect a food or play item is correct. I have 4 JRT's and I (and family members) can take away anything (respectfully), anytime and return it without any aggression whatsoever. I've practiced this from time to time to make sure there's no change in behaviour and they're still the same almost 10 years on.

My dogs used to be resource guarders. Slowly over time, they are not. They eat from their own dishes for dinner because I may sneak medication in their homemade food topper. For breakfast, they all freely rotate to each other's dish and have worked out any food guarding on their own because they know aggression is not permitted. Sometimes I may switch their food dishes from one dog to the other, which I get a sideways look from them, but they know it all tastes the same. They are one pack.

For many first time dog owners it's almost always a tug of war at first between the common sensical versus the emotional. Repetition is key, many dog owners don't follow through. Dog ownership is definitely a learning curve. Thank you Cesar for your hard work.

I was looking for a video like this when I brought home my puppy, she is now 2.5, I’ve taught her respect because of grandkids, I have strict rules with tug…one rule is my grandkids aren’t allowed to play tug…but she needs some work on resource food guarding. Other things she’s ok became I taught her to put toys away…so she knows she gets a reward for that…thank you for the video

i have a street pet her name is cherry this winter season i bought some warm jackets for her protection from chilly winds and built her a shelter next to my home. Before meeting me she was always searching for some food and ate whatever she could find so she naturally built a protective instinct towards the food, her clothes and the shelter but with some treats and love now she allows me to touch her bowl change her clothes and clean her shelter home

Working on this/ trial and error ; ) Dog-Muni/ Border collie..2yr. Spent to age of 4mon in crate with larger brother. Daughter rescued her. I rescued daughter. Not reactive with food with humans but extremely so with other animals. Also naturally and extremely reactive to cats. Daughter had one who just didn't come in anymore...I have 8 who come in and out of the house and are highly competitive for food. These are very vocal dogs so making up food (don't feed kibbles... cats are hunters which are supplemented) things get very wild. Live in an isolated area with no dog trainers so am very appreciative of these videos. ; )

My last dog, and current one, only did this behavior when I gave them a raw beef bone. ( Very good for the teeth, just don't give cooked bones, make sure bone bigger than their throat, if they start to splinter large pieces of bone rather than just gnawing, take it away) Anyways, I taught them both to drop bone and come, at first difficult for the them, because they'd never had one before, 🙂 Also when they showed aggression over it, which they never did before in anything, I took the opportunity to teach them, no bueno, with a vinegar spray bottle which they hated, and then I gave it right back. Did this couple times,they realized I wasn't trying to take it away from them. They never worried or got aggressive over that again. Just one time. Easy Peasy. Thank you Ceaser

The key is trust in the owner from being a puppy and a command of 'Leave it' which can apply to many things. We always use a method of swapping for another, better treat, so the dog associates a good experience from allowing us to take food away - food is very important to animals and they should always be allowed to eat in peace anyway. Returning confiscated bones etc after (with lots of praise) is good. Practice and patience is vital to build trust.

Hey Cesar ! Thank you so much of what you do. I have a 4/5 years old rescue dog. He is an amazing loving and caring dog, but… he turns primal, and even feral when another dog barks or even looks at him in a wrong kind of way, like a dominant look. If I would do what you did just here, I wouldn’t be walking straight for a long time. He is like that. I rescued him from the streets and he was in such a bad state that I don’t think he would survive more than a couple of weeks. He had 19 pounds at the time and today he has 42 and looking fabulous but I still can’t control him in those situations yet with just a few dogs that are also loud and showed him teeth in the past. Any idea ? Today he allows the presence of other big dogs, by me petting them and showing him that it is okay and don’t need to be primal with them and it worked for those.

My dog only has toy aggression with other dogs since we adopted him. He was with food but trained him out of it. I think he never had access to food, bones or toys in his past. Now it's random he goes after our other dog or other dogs when he has a toy if she goes near him to see what he is doing. Continuing working on him. Thankfully tiny dogs and able to seperate them as once they start they don't stop.

I've seen so many of your teachings, now when i see the title of an episode i imagine the dogs unwanted behavior, and the person dealing with it,. What they can do to get a good outcome without causing too much stress to either. I'm getting to the point where it's pretty close to what you end up doing. In this case though, i didn't imagine you moving the dog away from the food first which is of course ingenious and guarantees they probably won't bite bc it's not right in their face anymore.

All of my dogs never had food aggression, when they were pups I would put and take food from their bowls while they were eating now they have no problems with hands in their bowls no growling or protective stances, its super useful because I’ve had little kids put their hands in my pups bowl (8 months) and he does not care and will even eat out of their hands IF they offer his food to him but I still tell the kids not to do that because some dogs don’t like it. (Ps his breed is used as guard dogs and he is not a domesticated breed so I count this as a HUGE win on my part 😤)

My 7 months Siberian Husky has resource guarding behavior with bones. I'll try to practice this tip. He eats really fast. I think that he's food anxiety 😕... we're trying to control it with the slow feeder bowls too.

I start this when they are small. I also get down to the floor to this day and put my hand in their food to make sure they know i am the boss and you do not bite me. I have grandbabies to look out for, and they will not hurt them in any way. They are bull mastive/pitbull, and they know to be nice. If they get a little too excited, I have to calm them down because with how big and strong they are, they can still knock. Both my dogs still outweigh the grandbabies.
