This video has a lot to offer, from a serious discussion about the challenges of airspace both from the point of view ATC as well as the GA community to questions about acceptable pattern entries between the US and Canada, and finally, a fun, not-so-common taxi instruction.

Seriously this is important, The Finer Points is not much of a pro. He's playing on the edge with safety, in that congested airspace not using flight following. His story about flying an instrument training flight with a student and avoiding ATC highlights his recklessness. I've flown in most of the Bravo airspace in the country as an instructor including SFO, turn the student's com radio down when they're under the hood but especially when I'm simulating ATC I want the controller with radar following along and helping me out since I lose some SA while providing instruction.

The issue is that out of town pilots would have no clue of this situation and likely there are many there that aren’t as aware of it or care to volunteer to participate when the rules don’t require it. Here is a tip for finding the airport that I learned from flying gliders in the desert. Go on google and print out a satellite aerial image of the airport you're flying into. Have it with you in the cockpit, with key terrain features to guide you right to where the airport is. You will be hard pressed to find a dirt airstrip in a vast brown desert when you're low and unfamiliar with the area. The printout will point you right to your spot in a jiffy (and you wont need the print out the second time you fly there). You should also use this satellite image for emergency planning on your takeoff and landing, so you know where the nearby fields are. You won't have time to look around for a field at 600' when your engine quits.

I fly out of Chicago Executive (KPWK) and the controllers there have one approach from the north, since O'Hare (ORD) is just to the southwest. They don't want VFR traffic flying through that approach and they usually politely ask VFR traffic to vacate that area if they're on comms. It's perfectly legal to fly under the O'Hare bravo in that area but it causes all sorts of problems for the IFR traffic going into Executive, much of which is jet or turboprop traffic. I learned very early on to stay away from the approach when outbound or inbound and I had to learn a little bit about IFR flying because of that. I'm now working on the instrument rating and using that approach, so I understand even more.

I know that approach! That's where I did my initial training. Thanks for the comment Jon

In Germany we have a special kind of airspace for that purpose, it's a TMZ (transponder mandatory zone) with a so called listening squawk and a frequency to tune in. These TMZs are around/on top of towered airports with a CTR, but without the layered Charlie/Bravo airspace on top as big busy airports have them. The squawk and frequency are unique to every airport/TMZ and are practiced as follows: shortly before entering the TMZ you set you transponder to the squawk and at the same time monitor the frequency. No introductory call, just monitor. Now the radar controller can see that you are actively monitoring them and call you if necessary. After exiting the TMZ, you just switch back to squawk VFR and whatever frequency you want. This kind of TMZ is still pretty new in Germany (2-3y), but at least here it seems that this procedure is working pretty well.

@MrZrryan26 жыл бұрын
class E is a type of controlled airspace. Loosely controlled. IFR is positive control and provided with separation. VFR is not provided with separation and is not restricted. Unlike D or C, you do not need ATC permission to fly VFR in class E. And unlike B, you do not need a clearance to fly VFR in E. Clear as mud? Ya, airspace is like that.

Thanks for including references for the discussion on the differences between Canadian and American traffic pattern entries. I can see how the Canadian method works in the scenario you gave: you approach from the downwind side, fly over to assess, descend and do a 180, and then join the downwind midfield. But how does it work if you're initially approaching from the upwind side? In that case, you won't have the opportunity to assess the traffic, and you risk cutting someone off, like Jason mentioned.
@FlightChops6 жыл бұрын
I'll let some one more qualified answer in detail. But yes - I am glad this video seems to be starting a good conversation.
@vadermike77726 жыл бұрын
Max Marrone, when approaching from the opposite side of the downwind leg, in Canada, you approach at circuit altitude, and fly overhead the feild, and join what we call "mid left downwind", you simply join the downwind leg abeam the center of the runway and then fly, the base and final legs as normal. you would of course look and listen for other aircraft in the pattern, and adjust if necessary, and of course announce your intentions well in advance, and you would announce over the feild, as well as turning downwind, and final. (announcing base is recommended, but not an official requirement).
@derkiwi1516 жыл бұрын
In New Zealand we do what's called a "standard overhead join" - and it's way too complicated to explain. I like it though as it gives me a good chance to assess the airfield, check the windsock etc while remaining above the circuit (pattern) traffic. I guess it's just what you get used to.
@SteveDaviesCPT6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, in South Africa we position overhead, assess, then plan a dead-side descent such that we join the pattern entering the cross-wind and fitting in neatly.
@derkiwi1516 жыл бұрын
Steve Davies that’s pretty much what a standard overhead join is except you cross over the threshold to join downwind

I'm a Senior in flight school right now and I've never seen anything like this before lol. I couldn't imagine taxiing by houses that close on a street!

Julie Clark rocks! See is so much fun to hang out with, hate that this is her last year on the airshow circuit!

Just a ton of great info, cool scenery, and unique flying situations. You and TFP make some cool episodes...keep em coming.

Great discussion on the Class B. I fly that route (KLVK to KHAF) a lot and I always get flight following. Not because of the jet traffic (although now I will) but because of all the GA traffic that traverse the sunol area. I've had traffic pass directly over or under me (500 feet) numerous times. Without advisories I definitely would have been too close to a few of them.

Ha Steve, I was thinking the same thing, 'man, he's just hand flying and having a casual conversation while hitting the numbers' lol! You're awesome Jason!

Great to see you fly out of SQL. That’s where I did my flight training and got my PPL almost 20 years ago. Can’t believe they changed the airspace going over to east bay 😳. I always used flight following there too.

Great Flight !! At 12:00 min, the California Delta; 1000 miles of fresh , fish-able , ski-able water ! At 14:55, Folsom Lake and the City of Folsom, famous for the " Folsom State Prison " where Johnny Cash made his appearance. Cameron Park is in the Heart of the Calif. Gold Country ! Not sure when this flight occurred, but as of last night, 1/18/2019, the entire backdrop of the Sierra is now white in 5 feet of snow !! YaHoo !! Isn't Cameron Park about the Coolest place to live ? You flew over our house in the area of Sacramento. Safe Flights !

I love it Wayne! I always think about Cash when I fly over Folsom.

I used to live in Folsom and found this airport /airpark and took the same picture of that short stop sign, but in a car.

Given the size of your channel I think its excellent having Jason explaining these issues with the new Class B airspace. 👊

So cool! Looks like you guys may have went right past my home skydiving drop zone in Byron! Neat to see that air space from a different angle! Thanks for the video!

Think I'm gonna keep coming back to this video as motivation for my flight career. It's my dream to one day fly into this airport, since I grew up only a few block away. Currently here in Cameron Park once again waiting to join the Air Force and it looks like I'll become an Air Traffic Controller. Just watching this gets me so excited for the future!

Super cool, Spruce Creek in Florida is similar. Was so strange driving to a hangar right off the runway to get my medical certificate from one of the AME's who lived there. In fact, there's a lot of places like this in FL and Cali.

That was super cool landing and driving in the neighborhood! Shame about the Bravo/Echo conflicts there. On one hand it's great they opened up more Echo, on the other it really seems like they caused some unnecessary problems.

Another great video, Steve. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to what you do in 2019.
