Major props for telling the ground controller to standby on your flight following info. It would be so easy to copy it all down while taxiing but its one of those high risk, low reward things so common in aviation. The controller is happy to wait.

A while back I was about to turn downwind at Chicago-Midway Apt when a 727 did a turning departure climb right across my path. All I thought about was WAKE TURBULENCE. All that I got was a light buffet. Another time at the same airport, I did a simultaneous approach with a 737. He was on right, I was on left. Interesting.

Very cool videos. I'm ATC at DFW approach. If you ever have questions as to why we do something please let me know and I'll try to help. In this video it seems like you just had bad timing/luck for returning to ADS. Nothing you can help though. If we switch you to 124.25 just know that the airspace is congested and there might be some delay. Other wise we don't use that frequency. It gets very congested around DAL and ADS at times as you know very well. It's just all a matter of timing and what flow DFW is in (north or south). Keep the videos coming they are entertaining and you explain things well.

Entertaining video to say the least! Nice job in the congested airspace. Tip from a guy that hangs out in busy airspace - after your initial call you can drop to the last three of your call sign ( if there’s no other like call signs on freq) 6DF will suffice. East coast “congested” airspace controllers will point it out pretty quickly. Great channel!

Thanks! I usually do, but will sometimes wait until they abbreviate it first. Haven't done much flying on the east coast though so that's cool perspective (never had a controller actually point it out to abbreviate it!).

30+ years ago I used to live in the Dallas area. I flew out of a little airport, now gone, called Dallas North in Plano. One day I offered to give a friend an airplane ride at I think was Grand Prairie but it was uncontrolled at the time. I could go all the way around east Dallas but decided to “go for it” and just plow through the Class B. That flight gave me an epiphany. I suddenly realized how stupid the ATC system was. It was a 15 min flight and I made at least 5 frequency changes. Let’s see, CTAF, Approach, Dallas Tower, Approach again, a Naval air station that is gone now and finally the CTAF at the destination. It is insane. Why by now there isn’t a better way is amazing. Old ships used to use a speaking tube for the captain to issue orders to steering and an engine order telegraph to the engine room. That is how we do it in ATC now.

I am so glad you posted this, I'm about 6 hours into my PPC and 4 ground school lessons based out of KGTU. I always wondered what it would be like flying VFR from Austin to DFW area. The idea of flying VFR into class B still baffles me.

Trained from zero hours through CFI under class b/d/e airspace. It's not scary one bit once you hear "cleared through the bravo airspace", they'll give you instructions on what exactly to do. Easy peasy! Either fly a heading they give you or they'll sometimes do "no further left/right than 180" or whatever and an altitude to hold at. If it's not busy, they'll give you free reign to do what you want! (Own navigation, altitude your discretion, etc) nothing to be afraid of!

That's so awesome. Very cool memory! I once was landing on the east runway at Dallas Love Field with all the southwest jets and was cleared to land 31R and as I was on left base (flying through final for 31L) they canceled that landing clearance to make room for a coast guard plane that was on final for 31R and re-cleared me to land on 31L. Hard left immediate turn to make 31L and there was a line of Southwest jets waiting for me to get off the runway. I had to chuckle as they were burning fuel sitting there... sorry guys, not my fault!

@@AirplaneAcademy Address that "revert to plain language" does not incur utilization of drawl to appear casual you just say what you need to say and if do not know then say just that like you are talking to someone; I heard on ( unicom there ) a small craft pilot that did have a Texas Drawl ask GRK if he wanted him to get out of the way as a Lear inbound nearing GRAY VOR/DME ( do not have an IRF low to be correct ) was talking to GRK whom informed could not give clearance until the other craft squawking 1200 was "on the ground" Clear conditions since the other craft was VFR apparently the issue I wish to convey to Mr Goldbach is that only radio-silence occurs → hence by my call the controller could not issue directions to the VFR for some reason that might be in the regs with several obvious ideas like is there standard missed approach for VFR?

Thanks a bunch. It can be intimidating at first for sure. I think you'd be surprised that it gets so much easier over time. Don't let it stop you! I was 14 when I started to fly and usually froze on the radio even at an uncontrolled airport (I remember totally blanking in a super cub trying to say I was entering the downwind to land... that felt like a foreign language to me at the time) and it got better from there :)

Don't sweat your ppl ....it's a license to hone your skills and learn....visit your local tower, ATC...practice proper radio etiquette, there are slight differences though...listen to radio coms...to pick this up..don't worry about mistakes etc..ATC will help you with that...Thinking ahead! Know what your going to say. A simple thing I lesrned in situational awareness is to envision your plane flying over the chsrts..simple bur effective...in flying most GA aircraft I found it advantageous to maintain as high a speed as possible in terminal areas with jet traffic..I am not an instructor! But have thousands of hours..always ck anything out with CFI before you implement any tips or instructions...it is also a very good idea after you get your ticket to continue your training by having your instructor fly co-pilot with you every 120 days or so..all that wisdom is hard earned and well worth the cost...happy trails! Safe flights....

Good to see some local flying. Used to be based at AirPark so got a laugh out of your comment. Also "U" in the GUMPS check on fixed gear reminds me to pump my brakes and check for pressure. Years ago I was landing on a short strip and when I applied the brakes my right pedal had no pressure which made it interesting so now I give the brakes a quick pump in the air to avoid being surprised on the ground. Looking forward to watching more videos and maybe catch you at 3T0 or SLR one day.

Been flying for 35 years never once have used an iPad I know thier the thing now but I'm just old school, I've got all the equipment i need installed, I'm sure they are great just seems like an unnecessary distraction.

Flying in NY I dont remember ever NOT flying in Class-B airspace. Its good training flying amongst 737, 747, 380s even the concord was fun. JFK once said to me "our runways are not very long, but VERY wide" haha

I made my first flight in to Class B last week, flying to McKinney from the south. This video was very helpful. I guess because commercial flights are less frequent right now, I got vectored right over Love Field, then direct KTKI. Slightly more complicated on the way out. Thanks for the video.

Congrats on the first flight into Class B! Awesome stuff. You never really know what you're going to get, but it's usually one of a few different routes and after a few reps you get the hang of it. Good accomplishment though, so congrats!
