The lightning burst from Maradona through the England defence was a rehearsal for his great 1986 goal, but England played well and deserved to win. Love that England strip. There was a photograph of Maradona and alongside it the words of Ardiles..."Diego Maradona - without doubt the greatest player I have ever seen". I was thinking, who is this 18-year-old guy if he's so good? Why have I not even heard his name? Then we (Scotland) found out in June 1979, and England in this match. He remains to this day, in my opinion, the best player there's ever been.

If I recall this was shown really late on MOTD so was not live. Too late for me to be allowed to stay up I relied on my Dad to recount everything the next morning. My Dad was a massive George Best fan and he said he had never seen anyone as potentially great as El Dios. He described how Diego took on the English defence single (mind the pun) handedly. No repeats in those days and no chance of recording it it was many years until I saw this. Diego later said he learnt from this miss in 86 Mexico to go around the GK (Shilton). IMO not even Messi or Zidane and definitely not CR7 comes close to Diego possibly Ronaldhino but his light extinguished too soon unlike El Dios who still shines today.

Maradona at Wembley and playing his best football: what a treat! Challenges like Dave Watson's were the only way to deal with him. I assume Diego had to be strong like a bull to absorb that and all the other hits he took throughout his career...no wonder he ultimately fell prey of the great white painkiller...he was clearly a cut (even two) above the rest. RIP Diego, you will forever be remembered. By the way, this match also offered the cream of English football represented by Keegan's sharp shooting , Coppell's precision crossing and Tony Woodcock's marvelous heel touch.

The England team in the 80s had an excellent squad. It was difficult to win at Wembley Stadium. I just didn't understand why he didn't participate in the 1980 Mundialito in Uruguay along with Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy. In its place was the Netherlands [twice runners-up in two consecutive world cups]. Greetings from Niterói, Brazil.

The Gold Cup was held in the middle of the European football season (December/January) and the English league (as well as its clubs) were reluctant to release their players for a long journey to another continent.

I guess so. At WC 86, he even displayed his roulette (360 degree turn) action among several England players, including Glenn Hoddle, my favorite player. Many people still think the roullette action is invented by Zinedine Zidane. No, Maradona did it frequently long before Zidane did.

Nostalgic but faintly irritating when the players' names are not on their backs, there's no clock/score in the top left hand corner and the picture's almost square. Mind you, I'm old enough to remember one-camera coverage, low definition monochrome pictures on a small screen and definitely no replays. You couldn't even pause or rewind the TV coverage as it was broadcast. When I was young, the BBC proudly announced the introduction of a behind-the-goal camera. Wonder how many cameras there are at a top flight match these days?

I seem to have a vague recollection of watching this game on tv as a boy as I don't think Ardiles or Kempes were involved, despite being such big names at Spurs. Maradona was being much hyped back then but you can see why, such great skill. Kenny Sansom was also new to the England team as well. Yes he gave away the penalty but otherwise he played really well. Such a shame both of those talented players turned into such troubled individuals. But I love hearing again the names of those players I used to collect in my Panini album, Clemence, Keegan, Cherry, Watson....
