When he came on against Argentina in the Mexico World Cup two years later Barnes was just as effective, but on that occasion he was inexplicably kept on the bench until it was too late. I liked Bobby Robson as England manager but he got it wrong not starting Barnes in that fateful match ...could have been so different.

That was because Bilardo was stubborn as hell. Passarella adviced him to include Clausen to prevent Barnes getting to the finish line and sending balls to the middle of the area; right after Lineker scored, Tapia crashed a ball to the right post; due to a great combinatuon between Maradona and Tapia.

I've often said if Barnes started ahead of Steve Hodge that day, England would have probably won. Barnes came on as a sub and destroyed Argentina's right hand side. Provided the assist for Lineker and then repeated the same thing only for linker to miss. Argentina couldn't handle him and were clinging on in the end. Bobby Robson never used barnes the way he should have. Those days black players were overlooked . It's a reality.

+Alfred Malam The most successful 1st Division clubs in Europe during the 70's and early 80's were Liverpool, Forest, Villa and Leeds. And all of these teams consisted of BRITISH players.(And all of the managers were English or Scottish) Only Steve Heighway and Bruce Grobelaar come to my mind who were not. That's one reason why England generally fail...too many key players in those clubs were mainly from Scotland, but also from Wales.(Dalglish, Lorimer, Souness,Gemmil, Hansen, Hughes etc) And now in the PL, which is only big business now, if you're English and get to play, consider yourself lucky. It's all divas now who have no loyalty to their club. I'm sure Forest or Liverpool or the best of both from the 70's, if they represented a UK team, (with Clough as manager) would have done as well as Germany has. But it seems it will just get worse. We don't invest enough into the youth.
