Sole-Guard pads took my TB gelding in one year from 'ouchy over crossrails' to jumping 3'6" courses with sound, confident hooves. No matter what we did he wouldn't grow enough sole or frog; these pads gave him a long-term jumping career, he lives in them!

I wish I had this stuff back in the late 70’s when my horse kept throwing his sole after getting an abscess. It took nearly 12 months before he could work again.

So the frog is more like a callous, or a 'sneaker' for bearing weight on? I always thought it was live tissue, like a dog pad. Till i started watching a bunch of hoof trimming videos last night.

Horses with a digital pulse would find it very difficult to stand while waiting for sole-gaurd to set-up. Horses with laminitis are much more comfortable when the hoof can grow even a little concavity under the pillars and are comfortable on pea gravel without protection. Usually in none chronic cases the source of pain by day 3-10 is not at the toe but in the back of the hoof that has been damaged by the sinking, rotating coffin bone...this is easily check by watching how the horse shifts his weight (toe or back of the hoof) when lifting the opposing limb. While this type of hoof packing might help support P3 until there is strong lamina connection it does not offer the pressure and release that helps to stimulate growth of new sole. Sole-Gaurd should not be used on horses with laminitis .

From my personal experience if sole guard is applied correctly, it does offer the pressure and release dynamic needed to help stimulate solar circulation. The application can be very helpful as one of your options to help a laminitic case. The more options we have and more understanding of hoof function and rehabilitation.

See the video at 13:35 about the flexibility of this application. We also used a layer of the Vettec SOFT first under P3 then used a layer of Vettec Soleguard which is firmer but retains flexibility.

My first point is that most would find it very difficult to apply this material correctly because the horse will not be capable of bearing weight on three limbs for the drying time needed...the material could shift or compress during the hardening process. My next point is that by day three (recognized by a lower digital pulse) the pain is not associated with P3's proximity to the ground and the damage to the wall lamina but the damage to the bars and injury to the digital cushion, lateral cartilage and collateral ligaments that happened during founder. This is easily observed with a change from the laminitis stance to a stabbing stride and standing stance with weight more centered on the hoof. In all cases of founder the bars are damaged (cracked) either vertically if the heels shift forward/back or horizontal at the base of the collateral groove if the heels shift outward/inward (horizontal cracks cannot be detected for months). Protection is needed to prevent stone bruising P3...however...any protection from Packing the sole is outweighed by the continued damage it will cause to the bars. Packing will locked the bars in an unnatural position which will need correction lengthening the healing time. The environment that Packing the sole creates for anaerobic pathogens to flourish is increased dramatically reducing the horses ability to repair the hoof wall (grow lamellar wedge) and bar lamina because of the loss of replacement cells to anaerobic pathogens. After founder the horse needs to quickly allow the walls and bars to bear weight and lift the sole off the ground to increase blood flow...this is best done when anaerobic pathogens under control, pressure and release to the sole which is best provided by a controlled terrain...pea gravel and soft pasture.
