Children and Family Services (CFS), in collaboration with Aging and Adult Services (DAAS), hosted this year’s 10th Annual Fatherhood Breakfast in San Bernardino and Victorville. This event aims to celebrate and honor all the fathers and father figures in the community for their influence as parents and as “everyday heroes.” Children and Family Services Director Jeany Zepeda kicked off the June 1st Redlands event, and Assistant Director Jonathan Byers began the June 8th Victorville event with inspiring words about fatherhood and their positive influence on children.
At the Redlands event, Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. shared his story of being a father and its significance to him and his children. Keynote speaker Torrian Scott gave an engaging presentation on fatherhood at both events, sharing his personal stories and experiences to emphasize the importance of having an active father figure in a child’s life. Attendees had the opportunity to attend the community resource fair, where they received valuable information from various County and community partners, such as Preschool Services, Child Support, Youth Action Project, Domestic Abuse Victim Services, El Sol Medical Health & Suicide Prevention, Inland Empire Health Plan, Probation, First 5, Moses House Ministries, Department of Public Health Equity , California Association of Health and Education, and Children’s Choice Dental Care.
The fathers and children participated in a fun activity where they had to build the tallest tower with string, marshmallows, and pasta noodles. Children were ecstatic to engage in this activity, and the whole room was filled with a competitive spirit. The activity provided a unique chance for fathers and their children to bond and create memorable moments. “When fathers actively engage with their children and create lasting memories, they not only strengthen their bond but also foster emotional and social growth, laying the foundation for a brighter future,” stated Director Zepeda.
Father of the Year Awards were presented to two fathers at each event. These fathers were nominated by CFS social workers and Probation officers for their outstanding efforts to show up and be present for their children. The fathers gave heartfelt speeches, sharing their struggles and triumphs on their journey to reestablish their place in their children's lives. Aging and Adult Services Deputy Director Krystle Rowe concluded each event with closing remarks, emphasizing that fathers and father figures come in all ages and highlighting the diversity and inclusivity of fatherhood.
