Just so you don’t get confused, that girl is NOT a kitsune, she is a Chinese huli-jing (huli-jing means "fox-spirit" in chinese.) The story is based on Chinese mythology; men would fall for a woman who seduces and later tricks them, because she is a shapeshifting fox spirit. However, it is possible for huli-jing to be benevolent, but their "trickster" side is more heard of and therefore mistresses or generally bad women are often called "huli-jing" in China (which is sad because I love foxes and wish for the fox spirits to be known for the good.)

Kitsune in japanese mythology is a nine tailed fox that could turn into a woman, who was to smart for anyone to catch her.

Kitsune is actually a bit of a blanket term for Japan's mystical foxes. While yako were known to take the guise of a fair maiden in order to trick and seduce humans, they didn't necessarily need 9 tails to do so, as shape shifting is a basic ability of all kitsune. There's also the Inari fox spirits to take into account, since as servants of the god agriculture and financial success were typically far more benevolent than their trickster cousins. That went on for a spell, but there is far more to kitsune than just tricky fox ladies

I once saw an actual kitsune in the western Tokyo neighborhood where I was living at the time. My wife and I had just returned late at night from a three hour road trip to see her family and as I was unlocking the front door of our house a beautiful red kitsune came sauntering down our street. She stopped frozen, front right paw in mid-step perfectly balanced as we made eye contact with each other for no more than two seconds, then she scampered off in the opposite direction. She was so beautiful she left me wondering what sort of vision it was I had seen that night. Kitsune are rare in Tokyo though they can be seen occasionally in the country villages along the mountains. She was like a vision of feminine beauty, I can easily see how men in legends past would have fought over such a creature.
