You are amazing! the fact you help such underserved communities is such a cool thing to do. I don't know many creators who put so much effort in to make original things that have little guarantee of large views. You are my hero! I have refused to give up blender so many times because of you! I love all of your tuts! I hope everything in your life off screen is going well!

This has been a very interesting journey thus far. I am looking forward to the next one. I was wondering why one would want (need is a better word?) to make their own shader but I can see now that it's not just to re-create a glossy node sort of thing, but it can be used to create helper nodes such as what we made today. I already have a recent project that could have used exactly this and would clean up the node tree tremendously. Lets go find that patreon.

I must confess, when I clicked on the first video I wasn't expecting a great deal. Now I want to cancel today's work and go through all of them. I've always wanted to learn to code my own shaders and even something as simple as this will allow me to build a giant switch node, rather than having to daisy chain 20 nodes together. I'll be coming back for the rest of the series!

Great tutorial! This gives me so many ideas for custom nodes. Can't wait for the next one. That being said, I am going to be that guy right now. Um actually, they're called braces. You've got (parentheses), {braces} and [brackets]

I ran into an issue. I don't know if you mentioned it anywhere, but OSL doesn't work unless you hard save the text file first.

Very well made as usual. I wonder if ChatGPT is already capable of answering about this kind of stuff. I doubt it. Luckily there's CGMAtter!

Awesome ! Thank you. Is it possible to make a hexagon pattern? Or a triangle pattern with random size sections or maybe even a Blur ? That would be really cool

Yes, that's the kind of thing that's much easier to do through OSL than nodes!

blender's eevee uses a different shading language - glsl, mostly used in raster shaders/renderers in games and game engines

@@valovanonym As we can see in this tutorial such things like changing color of the material with OSL has no dependency on ray tracing. Probably most other features would require it, but it's definitely an interesting way of scripting materials for rasterisation renderer also.
