Graphics aside I can't really see what Derek's complaining about. He seems to be doing well in the game, he isn't dying in a cheap fashion, the game is giving you the DK experience with the hardware it's got. It's DK on the go so don't expect it to be like the console original, plus the Gameboy Color is just the same as the first Gameboy, just with color, so seeing a game like this done on the system is pretty cool. Also the game looked interesting enough to play. His footage didn't show any downsides.

The port was pretty much flawless gameplay wise. Derek just doesn't want to admit that his love for DKC is based on graphics and nostalgia for the snes version.

I feel like this version of DKC deserves a lot more credit than you're giving it. I don't know what you expect from GBC. Are you just insulted that it's not exactly like your precious SNES version? Review the game for what it is and stop comparing it to its SNES counterpart. Nobody in their healthy mind would expect the GBC to pull off what the SNES can. And you're not doing your job by talking about how good something else is. Forget there's Donkey Kong for the SNES and tell us: is this game fun, it entertained you, it would entertain us, is it a good game in and of itself? I don't care what it claims to be or what you think it claims to be. On the basis of the capabilities of the Gameboy Color, did the programmers come up with a playable and entertaining game or not? That's all we wanna know. Stop mentioning what this game is not and please talk about what this game is instead.
@Badbufon10 жыл бұрын
I completely and utterly disagree with the "review", the game obviously isnt the same as the snes, because, you know, its like comparing an atari game with an actual arcade. for what is worth, this game plays at least like 90% close to the original, and for a gbc game, it is flawless, tell me how many platformers were that good on the old gbc. a handfull tops. the graphics and sound take a hit, i will grant that, but gameplay? are you sure? i wont take that from a guy who dont use rolljumps on his gameplay.
@ArtilleryCrusader10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, comparing 2 games that have the same title, same levels and are the same fucing game is the same as comparing two different games. This is a remake, it's just a worse remake. And that's how it's being reviewed as. From both a graphical and gameplay perspective this game is inferior. And obviously I don't need to mention sound, you can hear that.
@Badbufon10 жыл бұрын
its is not a remake, is a port, a port to a inferior system, so is downgraded, obviously, but it could be really worse.
@ArtilleryCrusader10 жыл бұрын
Diego Banega port = remake My point still stands, this game has no reason to exist and is being reviewed as that.
@Badbufon10 жыл бұрын
***** a remake is often asociated with a upgrade for a game, not a downgrade, but anyway, it was cool to have a donkey kong country on the go, the land series was monocromatic and lacked features, this one not only has the full game, it even came with minigames and extras. by your standars there was no reason for any megaman, castlevania, mario bros or any port on the gameboy right?, well, i disagree, back then the the gap between handhelds and consoles was bigger than nowadays, so it was ok to loose some quality on the process. the important thing was the gameplay and the fun factor. and i repeat, the game was exelent in both the gba and the gbc port, i played those games for months, not only a few minutes for a quick review. he barely got past a few levels and he didnt do any roll-jump (a basic technique in any dkc game), so yeah, he can say he played the original a lot, but he is not showing it. and for graphics, when you emulate the game isnt the same as playing with the old screens, playing under sunlight really bring life to the sprites.
@mage1over13710 жыл бұрын
Diego Banega I would agree that it being port to hand held you should expect a downgrade. But I feel like a port like this was unnecessary, 6 years after the original. It probably would have been better to design a new DK, suited for the GBC. rather trying to port original. BTW all those game you mention Castlevania, Mario, Megaman. I'm pretty sure none of them were actually ports but rather unique games on the system.

This is one of those RARE times (pun intended) when I disagree with you-- and that's okay. I look at this game through its original lens... what it was when it was new... and it was mighty impressive to take a 16-bit game (complete with ACM) and somehow port it down to an 8-bit handheld. That was mindblowing to many at the time, myself included. Of course there were compromises made. The closer perspective can be frustrating. The play control may not be quite as tight. The colors are washed out. But... this version is as close to having a portable SNES (which wasn't far away with the GBA on the horizon) as we had then. I was okay with it. I mean... having Donkey Kong Country in my pocket to play at will was really something. If you look at this game through a modern lens, though, it doesn't hold up as well. The GBA port was better. Modern technology renders this version of DKC almost obsolete. It might be more frustrating to go back to this version today when other, better versions exist. I can definitely see that argument. I guess it's a matter of differing perspectives.

It definitely had visibility issues, and it certainly wasn't as great as the original release, but it wasn't like it was unplayable or anything. This version of DKC was my introduction to the Donkey Kong franchise, so I wouldn't say it's bad, just not nearly as good.
@Nalojuntu6 жыл бұрын
I'd go the same line. I never had the SNES so it allowed me to play DKC for the first time. But, damm, the visibility issue is huge and very frustrating ! DKC gameplay heavely relies on perfectly rythmed jumps, even close to an actual rythm game. Not seeing what's coming next turns the game into very unfair deaths and endless retries on a lot of stages, where the only way to get through ends up being "learn-every-steps-of-this-long-sequence-by-heart" or "sheer luck". This is sad because you can get what the level design actually intended to do. You can even guess the coming puzzles a few screens ahead when you really understand the philosophy of it, the "puzzle progression" inside each stage (by "puzzle" I mean "platform challenges"). But the short square view makes its difficulty unfair and, I can tell, untrue to the intent of the SNES original. I'm sure many situations are way easier to handle on the original version. especially : - the "escalator" chains - the wagons stages and other "auto-scroll" stages as the one where you've got to catch fuel barrels to keep going - the "falling platforms" stages, where you need to anticipate... what you definitely can't see on screen ! : / Yes it's still playable. Yes it's amazing for the GBC. But the legend put aside, it's not the best plaform game available on the GBC. Mario's have a different gameplay, less "bouncy rythmed", but more precise, more fair. From what I get, Donkey Land 1, 2, 3 specifically created for the GB don't have these problems. ?

Takes four minutes for you to stop talking about donkey Kong country on snes and then sort of talk about the gbc version and then go back to snes and then back to this just to say it's not as tight and it's zoomed in. That's true but I don't think it's gamebreaking. For a gbc port it's about as good as it gets, better then I think the devs thought they could do, but nobody considered this the definitive version. It's not the version you would play today outside of nostalgia, but it was one of the only games I deemed playable on gbc outside of Mario land, Kirby and Pokemon as a kid. I couldn't put this down till I beat it, I couldn't believe a game this good was on the gbc. I gave this a thumbs down because I think the video was hyperbolic and it took you forever to say what you deemed was actually wrong with it. I can't really see how they could've made this game any better for what it was. It's Donkey Kong Country for the Gameboy, and it really rocks at being that. If it's the year 2000 and I'm sitting in my living room with the option to either play it on the SNES or my Gameboy, I would almost certainly play it on the SNES. That's a given. Nobody expects what is obviously a downgraded port to play as well as the original. If I'm sitting on the schoolbus, or going camping, or I'm on a road trip with my family, it's great to have the portable option. The game isn't quite as smooth and solid as its original counterpart, but it's a damn good game all the same, and remains one of the best platformers for the Gameboy. This review failed to assess the merits of the game itself, but rather served as a comparison video (which it didn't even do that well.) There was nothing constructive or even specific about the game and what made it so bad. In summary, you pretty much explained that it's not the original so it's bad. People count on reviews so that we can have an idea of what to expect for the product being reviewed. This review failed to deliver. Try giving us some substance.

Isn't this just Donkey Kong Land with color though?

Donkey Kong Land had different level designs.

Considering the hardware they had to work with I don't think they could have done a lot better, and I'm somewhat impressed, but like others have said skip this one, and go for the 2003 GBA version.

thats how i feel about donkey kong returns its totally fuck manly because of the change in controls- the games built around the shity controls but it doesnt bring the same quality of game feel or contry within environments that is expected from a danky bong bluntry classic

It's more like Donkey Kong Land.

I dont know why, but i like so much to watch someone play the original DK country, and i love the music, but I always dislike to play it.

Why did people think a zoomed in camera was a good idea on a gbc or regular gb system its not. Look at Mario land one its a good game but Mario kad 2 uses zumed in camera and while it's more playable than most its still not as enjoyable as the first one

Nintendo could easily put this on the 3ds Eshop

Yeah both this version and the SNES version.

The thing I didn't like about the game was how difficult it was.

This game looks pretty okay for the hardware. If you want to see what shit looks like then look at Donkey Kong Land.
