In the 80's my parents got a prefab 3 bedroom cabin, it was bigger and nicer than our 3 bedroom house. Aside from the foundation, we assembled it. It was a lot cheaper than having someone else do it and you can pay friends and family with beer.

I know of some who have done it too and it was a lovely home. My younger son builds large buildings for Ski resorts and apartments and he started out building modular many, many years ago and worked his way up to all of this. I think he could do it if we were able to get one. The land our great-granddaughter now has and it cold work. As one is older it is more frightening to go through it all though. . But would be nice.

I saw one the other day, it was beautiful. It was white and grey and was absolutely breathtaking. It’s foundation was like it was made especially for it. It almost looked like it could leap into the sky and disappear within the clouds. It’s top had long beautiful extensions that carried sound from within. Truly breathtaking.......I have never seen a rabbit like this one🤪. Stay home and be safe #coronavirus 😷 #smile 😁

I love these options, at the very least, they are expanding people minds and ideas of what a home can be, not just the typical house that every 6 year old draws that dominate the market currently. I really believe the industry is prime for a major change in building type, form, material, operation, etc and I am very interested in seeing (and influencing) where this goes. Great video 👍

I love the gambrel roof & the bamboo houses. They show such inginuity. Both in the gloss natural wood finish. I am partial to metal roofs & shutters, preferably evergreen in color. As a limited mobility senior citizen, I can not do stairs. Would need regular sized refrigerator, side-by-side washer & dryer. ADA regulation doorways & bath rails, walk-in or roll-on rain shower with hand held capability. Not the only handicap person in need of affordable housing.

I like these too, but cost, land and zoning is the real issue to me. It isn't easy to do. ADA can be factored in with design edits, since most companies will accommodate the disabled if you ask.

How do you keep critters and raccoons from living under those houses and do a lot of damage to them from underneath the floors? And how do you prevent flood water to enter the houses when they are sitting on the ground or just a few inches above groundlevel? You could also end up with a pool of water underneath the houses from rainwater running down and under them. And you also need access to the houses from underneath them for a number of reasons. Floorboards or floor joist rotting from moisture in the ground being one of them. The foundation is everything on a house. If that is not done correctly, the house will soon be damaged.

@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr 4 жыл бұрын
The problem is that if you open the laws to allow the "nice" prefabs.. you also open it to the junky ones that lower your property values as well. "I took the wheels off, it is not an RV on a lot in the middle of downtown.. it is NOW a tiny home." Towns got tired of people figuring out loopholes in the letter of the law. So they are a PITA now to work with.

I looked into shipping container homes around the same time this video came out and they were about twice the price to have built than a timber frame slab on grade home. Nowadays they're even more expensive and extremely inefficient. They hold moisture like crazy and mold super easy due to all the moisture which is one of many reasons Canada has banned container homes

All very cool. However, with the off-grid mobile home that has the roof covered in solar panels be SURE to check your local laws before you buy one. NOT all places will allow it, especially near flight paths, because the reflected glare can blind pilots. As my uncle found out some years ago when he tried to solar-panel his roof, even someone on a property many miles from anywhere can be legally ordered to cover or take down the panels, if it's felt the reflected glare will present any danger to pilots.

My childhood home had a spot by our couch where the wall was always cold in winter. During a remodeling years later, found out the reason was the builder had nailed up and finished the dry wall with no insulation in that spot…likely when the builders ran out. I guess this could happen in prefab too, but seems like more likely not to do this.

You'll never have enough electricity without hooking it to the grid. Getting water from the air is extremely energy intensive and cost many times more in electricity than it would cost to simply buy the water. Atmospheric water is a scam, it works, but it's never worth it.

Nah, prefab's have been a thing since the Sear's catalog would pack everything onto a rail car for homesteaders. Issue is these homes can only be built so big, and while they are cheaper than other homes in material and construction costs, the set up costs aren't much different. Those being the land, utility planting, foundation and taxes. Building the house proper is really a third of the cost of building a home, and until that becomes cheaper, these homes likely won't be more than a niche actively pursued rather than substituted over conventional homes.
@user-lu2tb9nc3x

@@SCIFIguy64 you forgot the red tape items like permits, inspections, etc. Plus, need to check land/ neighborhood, zoning if prefabs are even allowed (can fall into category of manufactured homes).

Some interesting thoughts and its good to see people working to innovate but mostly these are not practical and cost up to twice as much per sqft than a stick built or in particular big brand modular house (not trailer). If you want to pay a heavy premium for design go ahead but these are generally not built any better than a big brand modular and for the price of some of those 500ish sqft units you can get 1000sqft in a big brand modular. And if you want one of those hex houses, you may as well just get a mobile and put it on a foundation. You could easily save a bunch of money and get a house that is just as well built if not better.

Itrs not as easy as it sounds. Many people are not aware that you will require licensed contractor in most states to get city or county permit. You may also need forklift or crane to reach heights in mosty cases. You will need licensed electrician and licensed plumber. Check out before jumping into frying pan. If seller promises to help with permits and contractors then it will be fine. Just be careful as building departments are very choosy on R-value factors besides few others.

In the UK most of the land is owned by less than 1% of the population so leasing would be expensive. We need a progressive land tax that would act as a flat tax on rich landowners. Young people can't afford property here.

Hmm never thought of that for usa. Direct tax on rich. We consume their marked up products they sent to china to make and pet he 800% markup. They need taxes so the consumers can have a home at least a zero interest loan, something.
