Awesome to see how big the Cormorant is, and such fine precise control from all involved, impressive 👍

That'd be impressive were the thing stationary, but while racing along?! Man... the skills involved here are amazing.

It’s actually standard for all maritime winching to do it underway when possible. Boats are a lot more stable and it keeps most of the rotorwash behind the boat as well. Doesn’t mean it’s easy but it’s easier than winching to a stationary boat (have a mate who is heli crew)

@@nmart1538 Good point! Any boat underway would track a more stable/predictable route and behaviour that way and hadn't thought about the benefit of the wash being moved aft of the effort. Amazing stuff.
@mattfrom103Ай бұрын
@@nmart1538 This is exactly correct. Had that boat been stationary I would have hoisted from at least 100'. Had I tried low level like in the vid I would most likely have flipped or destroyed that boat with my downwash. We actually picked a speed just before the rhib is about to get on plane. That way it was nice, stable, and stuck in the water. The only thing I would say your missing from your excellent explanation is that helicopters are more efficient the faster they go (to a point) so less power is required if the boat is under way and, not only is the boat more stable but it can maintain a heading. Boats can't steer without being under way.

@@mattfrom103 thats incredible, i always wondered why it was done like this

To add to the other replies: RHIBs have no rudder, they steer by turning the outboard motor. For that reason a stationary RHIB has zero steering and will be pushed around by wind and waves. It will also turn sideways against the waves and become completely unstable.

Remarkable work!! Looks even cooler from below the helicopter. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all our valourous men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces!

Merry Christmas Matt to you your crew and all the ground staff that make sure your ability to perform these skills and life saving outcomes never fail. Would love to send you all a welfare package from the UK

Thanks for the kind wishes. I appreciate the thought of sending a welfare package but it is really not necessary. All the best.

Helicopters are goddamn black magic. Flying skewed like that, which God said this was okay!?!?
