Flew in this aircraft as a crew chief in the early 90's. Had the greatest time doing that job. fuel up and fly for 4+ hours before needing to refuel again. So many different missions. Internal cargo, external cargo, troop pickup or delivery, medical evac, para ops, rubber duck (dropping a boat out the back along with a Recon team), carrying 3 fast attack vehicles in the back landing then they would drive out. GPS was brand new. We did our navigating with a map and clock. Shipboard operations were a lot of fun as well. Deployed on the old LPH's which don't exist anymore.Crashes weren't a concern. Always felt safer being in any helicopter if I did go down than if I were in a fixed wing aircraft. Best job I have ever had.
@Brian-WolfmanJack998 ай бұрын
Best job ever! I was at New River from '95 - '98. For us, we had GPS and the FLIR system. The V-22 was still in testing then, and we would hear about them crashing all the time. I'm so glad I didn't ever have to fly in one of those! While we were training in NC one of our 53s (HMH-464) had an engine fire and they had to do an emergency landing at Camp Lejeune. Everyone was ok and they were able to put out the fire before it all went up in smoke. That all being said, I'm with you. I always felt safe in that beast.

I served in the Marine Corps reserve as an avionics technician with HMH-769 out of Alameda NAS, in California. Although my MOS was 6317, aviation electronics on F/A-18s, I transferred to the helicopter squadron because I was going to college in the San Francisco Bay area. At that time, we had the CH-53D, which only had two engines. It could get pretty scary when the pilots were flying evasive maneuvers, close to the ground and rocking and rolling through valleys. The whole air-frame would occasionally vibrate heavily turning hard. The reason for the reputation for accidents was a result of the introduction of the 53E model, with the addition of the center mounted, third engine. The extra power over stressed the rotor shaft in use at the time, causing it to break apart. This issue was addressed, and the accident issue is no more.

Amtrackers don't usually get to fly in helo's. We move the infantry from ship to shore. It was pretty fun. The pilots were going near vertical in the turns! Had a lot of guys puking in their soft covers!! The 53 pilots got to drive our AAV's since they gave us a ride on their helos. Know what? THEY DROVE THE SHIT OUT OF OUR AAV'S. Kept the RPM's up and didn't bang the final drives. Semper Fi.

My late grandfather worked for Sikorsky, in fact he was personally acquainted with Sergei Sikorsky (Igor Sikorsky's son). He had plenty of stories about his time there, but being a kid at the time, I was mostly interested in the weird humorous things that came out of having a bunch of geniuses in the same room. My personal favorite was this one time he surprised Sergei and started mucking with him by switching languages from Czech, to Russian, to English (my grandfather spoke very fluent Czech, despite being American born). To this day I kick myself for never asking about his actual work on the helicopters. I look at something as magnificent as the Stallion, and I find myself desperate to know more about what it was like working on that beast. I'm not sure if he actually worked on the CH-53 (it was near the end of his time with the company), but I'd still love to have his perspective again.

In response to your last question. When I went to MCAS New River to go through Crew Chief school is when the swash plate shutdown happened. The Marine Corps fleet was grounded right after the Japanese CH-53 went down. It turned our 3 months class into a 10 month class. But, no, I was never worried about the plane going down. Probably because I was part of the crew, and I knew the AC. In contrast, I sweat bullets when flying commercial, as I'm just a normal ol pasenger at the will of the pilot and whoever did the pre-ops. As a side note my Plane Captain school instructor was Sgt. Pfeister, the Crew Chief on the CH-53 who rescued Capt Scott O'Grady. His reputation kept our class out of ALL working parties! Even after the two hurricanes that hit NC in 1996, we just chilled out in class or got to go back to the barracks. HAHAHA!!!

I'm guessing your a civilian that doesn't know anything about warfare or military equipment like helicopters. That Russian helicopter you are talking isn't practical at all, that is only a handful of them. Also if it is something that big that needs lifting, it would be a LOT more simplier and easier to load it onto a transport aircraft, which the US has the largest fleet in the world.

Give me a Chinook every time, it is the best Helicopter I ever had the pleasure to work on and fly in, all over the U.K and Europe, and no matter what the aircrew did with it, it never let us down. Easy to maintain and with minimum support very rarely had much down time. The Stallion is a good looking humungus beast, but doesn’t have the pedigree of the Wokka. You mentioned the main rotor blade inspection system, that’s old tech, learnt about Blade inspection method or BIM whilst I was a sprog back in 1980, and AFCS is just a generic name for automatic flight control, in different flight axis and envelopes, again nothing new. As for in flight refuelling that’s impressive but again nothing new. Got to love its weapons fit, the .50 cal and GAUs might not hit a lot but it will keep the enemies heads down, especially if the guns weren’t harmonised properly, then it would be just Spray and Pray.

I worked on the E model in the Marines... the guns were easily interchanged with the MK19... and as for the fuel tanks there are 4 mains in the sponsons plus the 2 auxiliary so six total for regular service... awesome helicopter to work on.... during testing they actually got the giant to do a barrel roll

I got to fly on the E model in 1984 during boot camp. It's definitely a beast! I'm sure the K model will be a lot better. I hope they build 500 of them.

I got to tour the plant where the tail section is made, because my dad works there. he's actually on the design team for it. It's pretty sweet.

Its the GREATEST Helo flying ! . . . one of only "2" helo's, that can do an INVERTED LOOP !.. . . considering its size, an weight, I say THAT'S "Quite Amazing" !.

+Matsimus Great video. You obviously know lots about this workhorse, and I have numerous questions to ask you about it. Does YT still have a PM facility? I can't find one. How do I get in touch with you to discuss this topic privately please? It's quite significant!
