One of few Chinese songs I know that has a political message - against apartheid and dedicated to the late great Nelson Mandela. I regret not listening to Beyond when I was younger. Wong Kar Kui deserves our admiration as a singer/songwriter who dared to speak up against the HK establishment. This song was popularised during the Thatcher era - Margaret Thatcher was one of the most vocal proponents of the incredibly racist apartheid movement in the 1980s, and wouldn't have been too pleased with Wong Kar Kui, a British colony subject who dared to rally support for Mandela. The song continues to be a rousing anthem even today, but rarely does anyone mention it as a homage to the race struggle in Africa. We need more Chinese songs like this that dare the question the status quo and openly talk about global injustices, of which they are many.
