Chaïm Soutine (13 January 1893 - 9 August 1943) was a Russian painter who made a major contribution to the expressionist movement while living and working in Paris.
Inspired by classic painting in the European tradition, exemplified by the works of Rembrandt, Chardin and Courbet, Soutine developed an individual style more concerned with shape, color, and texture over representation, which served as a bridge between more traditional approaches and the developing form of Abstract Expressionism.

I was wondering what may the landscapes by this painter look like. Well, they look very expressive and fascinating. As if every object in his pictures was a living being. Buildings, roads, clouds, trees... everything. Not only they have their own will, mind, soul, they can talk to each other, interact with each other. There is some sort of magic in such an order of things, but also a truth.

Hello Kinda, thank you very much for your visit and your comment. His landscapes known as the "Céret Style" are amazing: they are unstable, vibrant landscapes, with movement, like earthquakes. He liked to get more into the light, the space and the atmosphere, to be another element of the landscape, a part of what he paints. This is how the landscapes he painted between 1919-1922 in Céret (in the French Pyrenees) are characterized. The space is very compressed, the forms are flattened, one form merges with another as well as the space in front and in the background. The elements are linked together. All this produces as a single shape on the canvas composed of several joined shapes. In Ceret they are two-dimensional landscapes. At Cannes, she used a brighter, brighter palette due to the summery weather. Characteristic of the Cannes style is the landscapes of the city seen from above. Then during the Cannes period, the "Cannes Style", Soutine highlights the identity of objects (in Céret the forms were fused with each other) now he separates one object from another. Highlight the object as an identity (as an autonomy). In Cannes the landscapes are more open and luminous. The composition in his later still lifes, portraits and landscapes refers to a single central object that envelops Céret's landscape.
