Nitpicking here, but more evidence points to Miles Davis having written Donna Lee than Charlie Parker. Miles was 17 days shy of his 19th birthday so still a relative unknown compared to Parker. Record company put Parker’s name on the record, probably to try and sell more copies. Miles claimed having written Donna Lee, but Parker never did claim it. Weird story.... still amazing playing!
@leobrahmachari66113 жыл бұрын
For one thing, strictly musically speaking it is suspiciously outside the style of Miles Davis and sounds much more like Parker- also Miles Davis is notorious for claiming several tunes written by others to be his own ( Blue in Green written by Bill Evans comes to mind). Just saying
@rickyvm44573 жыл бұрын
@@leobrahmachari6611 and yet, Donna Lee is awkward on alto, compared to Tenor and trumpet. Birdisms (as amazing technically as he was) are often things that feel good on alto to play fast. Most of his heads just flow nicely. What other tunes come to mind that Miles seems claim falsely were his own? I hadn't heard that.
@jazzlessonvideos3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! We really enjoyed producing this series. Yes, it is commonly accepted that Miles Davis composed this piece, but legally the composition is credited to Charlie Parker by the publishing company, Atlantic Music Corporation, so we credited both Bird and Miles.
@m4x3583 жыл бұрын
@@rickyvm4457 Solar was written by Chuck Wayne, original name "Sunny". Four was probably (?) written by Eddie Vinson, an alto saxophonist. Blue In Green was written by Bill Evans, composition attributed to Miles. I think Dig also and maybe Nardis? Don't know.
@abbottkatz88303 жыл бұрын
You may be right, but Miles also claimed authorship for Blue in Green even though Bill Evans apparently wrote it. I think Davis' estate later acknowledged as much.
