Great video as always. Selvedge demin tends to be made on older looms and the selvedge edge is the actual edge of the fabric as it's made. So the jeans pattern will be cut right to the edge of the fabric. Newer looms are much wider and the jeans are cut from anywhere on the fabric. The older selvedge looms are less consistent with the weaving which leads to better fades too. Also watch out for brands literally sewing a fake line of selvedge tape in the bottom of the leg. I have a pair of Common People jeans that just have a fake line going about 8 inches up the leg so it looks like real selvedge. That concludes my boring lesson 😂

I didn’t realise there was a difference between the older and newer looms! That’s really good to know! Thank you! I learn something every day!

You don't need many new ideas really, Pete, because the buzz we get from wondering what's on the next rail is always fresh, and of course all the knowledge we learn is super handy. Also, even if you make similar comments about different brands and styles it's a good thing as it helps to reinforce the info. Viewers could never remember all the info about different brands and styles if just seen once. Anyway, I reckon a good idea for a vid would be for people with not much cash who are just starting out and can't afford to take even medium risks, but need to be pretty sure they will get a return. Like a kind of 'how to start from scratch, gradually making enough money to buy more stock' type of idea. Cheers Pete, Cool vid as always.

Ah, so the fraying end of the fabric, instead of being zigzagged/serged/overlocked has been covered again in more fabric. I would say it has been finished with bias tape. The fakes would have stitching on top of the overlocked/serged edges.
@Chaddypete3 жыл бұрын
It’s not even bias tape. There are special looms used for this type of denim that densely weave the edge to prevent fraying. The looms used to almost exclusively be in the US but outsourcing reduced the practice as its expensive en mass. The Japanese bought a lot of those looms from the US which is why newer selvedge and high quality clothing comes from Japan as they loved the 50s/60s fashion!
