Have to say that Chad, like almost every great jazz musician I have met and known is a real mensch. Humility is the key; Brecker, Potter, Redman, Berg, Liebman...all have/had it. As an older guy in the process of learning the canon, it is comforting to know that a real jazzer is never satisfied.

Wow! Giant Steps is a unique challenge of a tune! 1:00, as mentioned in another comment, is clever, and highlights how the tune can easily convert back and forth between time signatures - such as 3/4.

I wish that this form of music could be appreciated by a broader audience. I'm sure if you're reading this and enjoyed the music, you're probably a musician. Truly amazing work, keep it up!

Great rendition! The Woody Herman &Thundering Herd Big Band's 'La Fiesta' album came to mind. Can't wait until i have the money to purchase Chad's materials. Almost 60, clarinetist that hasn't played in close to 30 years,(messed around with tenor and flute just before I stopped altogether). THIS TIME I'm going to practice correctly and do what I'm instructed to do to prep for a lesson! Chad is such a bad azz, and seems like a VERY humble and decent cat. Kudos to all the participants,

Haha 😂 poor Tommy Flanagan wasn’t ready for it
@MarvelousMaxter4 жыл бұрын
Imo flanagan’s solo was genius. A great contrast to the intense wall of deliberate notes that Coltrane played
@pieterzegers77884 жыл бұрын
You should listen to Flanagan's solo on Giant Steps on his trio's Giant Steps album, he's a monster of a pianist and one of the few who wouldn't have fucked it up completely on the original recording tbh
@brooksrichardbrown4 жыл бұрын
To be fair to Tommy, the Coltrane version was a LOT faster and I heard Tommy had zero preparation, just "here's the music" and go.

I know it’s not a competition but wow, starting to feel like Chad’s the best saxophonist in the world... at age 30... crazy. 2:44 must be a world record for something...
@charliejones65264 жыл бұрын
I know! His sound and technical abilities are insane, especially considering his age
@evantaylor75314 жыл бұрын
Yeah he’s very technically good, and I love his work, but I would argue for CHRIS Potter or Joshua Redman, considering that Chad is mostly licks. That said, Chad is awesome!
@seandeegan20674 жыл бұрын
(Potter, Redman, Walter Smith III, Ben Wendel, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Kenny Garrett, Eric Alexander, Seamus Blake) That thing at 2:44 is all approach-tones and the sound is definitely more technically impressive than MUSICALLY (in my opinion). Chad's great, but come one now
@kpoudavoff4 жыл бұрын
IMHO the only thing Chad has is insane technique. It’s not enough to become the best saxer (or musician).His sound is very flat and dead (listen to old masters man , they had such a fat tones ) To me all this shredding is not musical (considering that he does it in every solo), it’s like “yo man look how fast I can play my licks from book huh“. No doubt Chad is great musician , but man , come on , let’s play music not fire licks. Chad’s fans , please don’t go bananas, Everything I wrote is IMHO , have a nice day 😂
@charliejones65264 жыл бұрын
@@kpoudavoff I don't really believe that his playing is purely licks. If you've been keeping up with his playing over time, you'll notice that his style and playing has gotten even better. Plus, the speed at which he does his shredding is very fast. The finger dexterity that doing that takes oftentimes takes years of dedicated practice. In my opinion, he is very accomplished and practiced, and is unique.
