I have had to install ball joint 3 times on my 06' 2500 4X4 (first a set of Moog's, followed by a set of Proforged, and finally a set of EMF's) 265,000 miles on it. A couple of tips (providing you have air tools) There is a cup tool available to use with an air hammer that makes removing the hub/bearing a breeze (Lisle 38210) I will also just cut about an inch and a half off the upper ball stud with a muffler cutoff tool to get the clearance needed to use the ball joint press. Using these methods it's possible to do the ball joints in under 45 minutes per side.

I bought a ball joint kit from harbor freight for a little less than $70. don't laugh, it actually works great. the C-clamp is pretty strong and that's the key. another thing is that I cut a couple of the tubes a bit shorter so I have the right combination that isn't too long to fit. I'm not sure I would have felt as comfortable chopping up a $150 set.

I gotta say the parts stores we went to in order to get a press kit and neither store had the correct press kit. We fought like crazy to get these things out and in. The one side we did took a couple of days because everything was so hard to get apart and lack of having the proper press kit. Hopefully the one I'm about to order off of Amazon will do the trick, yes it's a fair deal even though hopefully we never have to do this again.

I read somewhere if removing the right shaft without putting into 4wd the shift collar will drop out of position and if that happens you will need to remove the CAD cover and realign the shift collar?? Not sure if this happen to you? Again...this only applies to a CAD axle housing so I believe 02' and newer may not have this....

@ernestoluzan3 жыл бұрын
10,000 miles that’s crazy! Is your truck on hard roads often? I’ve worked in a shop where we’ve done dozens of moog ball joints on 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks and rarely see them back for the same thing. Only thing I can say about less expensive ball joints is they require consistent grease and front end alignment checks. Also if a person is running offset wheels with oversized tires, the ball joints take a beating
@disgruntledconservativevet17983 жыл бұрын
@@ernestoluzan Yes I live the mountains. Road to our house is very rough. I have a 6” BDS long arm kit and running 35s. I do some pulling, and spend a little time in and out of orchards clearing fallen trees and limbs. And we take a few trips to Mojave to play with the toys. I pull a 30 foot toy hauler when we go. I spent the $850.00 for the Dynatrac Ball joints. Bad thing, you can’t adjust Camber or Caster.
@ernestoluzan3 жыл бұрын
@@disgruntledconservativevet1798 I understand why you needed a more robust set of ball joints in that case. For the majority of people spending their time on pavement, even towing recreationally, moog is enough. The only catch is most people neglect to consistently maintain their vehicles. The main reason I know this is I’ve made a living repairing broken vehicles that could have made it much longer with some planned maintenance. I do however see how these high end ball joints can be an answer to a hard application truck.

*ball joints are a whole lot easier to press out on a 4X4 than on a 2wd you can buy the press at Harbor Freight but I'm speaking from experience here. DO NOT BUY THE HARBOR FREIGHT EXPANSION KIT! it's complete garbage! I used 2 cups on pressing out the bearings on my 2WD ram Mega cab and BOTH cups I used bent far too easily. it could have potentially meant someone getting hurt if I hadn't been mindful of what I was doing at the time. the main ball joint kit was fine though everything in it worked as it should with no issues but for the extra kit you need to be able to press things out properly look to the other vendors because Harbor Freight's expansion kit sucks and could be potentially dangerous depending on how much you load the thing up*
