For those of you who have come to comment that I complain too much at the beginning and need to git gud, I’m not arguing that enemies in the bad tier are bad because they’re hard. I just don’t think most of them are designed in a fun and/or fair way. In fact most of them can be pretty easy with a hit and run strategy, I just don’t think that their cheap moves/methods are commendable. I generally prefer for difficult enemies to have engaging and memorizable movesets like those near the top.

Bruh, that is literally on *you* . If you don’t get it, don’t blame the game. I get summoned in these games all the time. I get so fed up with the person that summoned me I start dropping items to clue them in on what is wrong, or repeat the same moves over and over again to show them what they should do. Most of them ignore me, or think I’m just doing random shit for laughs. So it goes to show: Even when someone else is waving the answer directly in front of your face, it doesn’t matter if you’re not *paying attention* . Keep that in mind the next time you run straight at an enemy, spam R1, die instantly, then complain that it’s not “fair” or “well-designed”.

DUDE, COME ON. Please consider this carefully. this you are in a fearsome prison, within a fallen kingdom, in a dying world. jailers can be annoying but they're essential to what makes the dungeon area so terrifying. they convey very well the sense of looming terror of that area, the punishment, the torture, the frustration, the end of all hope a prisoner feels. this is also the most horror themed area of the game and they have a pivotal role: make you feel powerless. even if you're overleveled and with great gear, the jailers can level out your power and make you feel scared of everything again. they create a survival horror situation, in which you are heavily punished for rushing in and get detected, forcing you to run and fear any unexpected encounter. does this feel like "terrible design" to you? Also, they're confined to one area and are pretty frail. if you ambush one you can kill it without any risk of it reacting to you. they're not difficult to fight at all, they just use attacks you can't defend from in a conventional way. and they look pretty cool, too. you have all the right to dislike them, but saying they're horrible design and poorly exectuted doesn't make you look very smart.

Fun fact about the giant crabs: When they wind up for their double claw overhead slam, they are always 100 percent vulnerable to a critical hit as long as their claws are above their head. i like how cage hollows are the first enemy that teaches you how some enemies dont just have a lot of HP but instead have some strong resistences, trusting attacks deal extremely high damage to the caged hollows since you are poking your weapon through the gaps between the cage bars. Also noticed how many enemies in this game had understandable resistences, like how almost all flamable enemies have maggots or slimyness in common, unclothed enemies like lycanthropes or hollows are really weak to bleed or metalic knights being weak to lightning. This was lost in elden ring to me, mainly because of how hard to tell some elements are or the ambiguity of holy damage in general makes you just chug it and deal with enemy resistences. In DS3 i remember the classic rules ALWAYS applied and were notizable. lightning -> knights and dragons dark -> demons of chaos fire -> maggots, wood or slimes magic -> the neutral element strike -> stone and skeletons pierce -> enemies with gaps in their protection slash/bleed -> naked enemies In elden ring i cant remember a single enemy resistence that truly matters aside from Wood and Rot being weak to fire and the undead being weak to holy.

Damn, the Jailer is literally my favorite enemy in the whole game. It's so creepy and changes the vibe of its area so much. If the main enemy in the dungeon was another more standard tough enemy where you just hold shield or roll to win, the dungeon just wouldn't feel as oppressive. I don't think any enemy in the game elevates its area as much as the Jailer, and that's wht it's my favorite enemy type in the whole game.

I think that the worst part about the jailers is that when your health bar returns, your health does not. This means that a single trailer can take 99% of your health bar, and then you have to heal all that off, without taking a single hit.

Jailers definately are the worst enemy, but I appreciate them being a thematically fitting environmental hazard tied to a single dungeon. Forcing you to play carefully through a place that otherwise could be really short setpiece, and keeping player on their toes, building that dread if there is going to be a jailor around next corner...
@JI_Qm

They would be much prefered over other enemies if it was'nt for that tragic placement of like 6 or 7 of them near the witch area , it gets tedious either fighting them 1 by 1 or running the risk of being 1 health when fighting all of them , Up until that point you mostly face them in either 1v1s or groups of 2 or 3 jailers , they could've easily avoided that tragic placement by placing 1 one jailer on a respective cell door , but no we are fromsoft we have to drop a random shitty encounter in every area of every game 🤫😂 .

Mannn I love the Jailers. The health drain is honestly kind of hilarious to me. It just drains so quickly i can only laugh when it happens to me. Plus their design is super cool and fits the area they're in perfectly. If you think about it having a vitality sapping [lamp?] ability would be extremely useful for a Jailer/guard. Any and all violent or fleeing inmates would be done in immediately without offing them; It just fits their purpose in the setting perfectly. Plus, if you're not too greedy you can pull one at a time and just punish tf out of them. The high stakes of fighting them while being only 1 hit from death with no way to heal is totally exhilarating to me. I think they're an A-tier enemy personally, maybe even S-tier. It'd be one thing if the Irithyll Dungeon was super long and, or they had giant health pools but both are not true, their section isn't too long and they go down in a few hits. Basically, I like DS3 better with them than without them. I think they make the game and that section extremely memorable, like absolutely no one forgets the Jailers after a playthrough of DS3.

My favorite are pontiff knights. Every other knight feels samey. Slow, beefy, high damage output, fairly predictable moveset, and not very graceful. Pontiff knights tend to travel in packs where one of them is standing at a long distance and harassing the player with projectiles, while the other in engaging in a melee fight with very long combos akin to Pontiff, and masterfully keeping range and avoiding the player (as far as PVE goes). Their ai actually feels like it was programmed differently. Whereas SIlver, Lothric, Ringed, Cathedral knights are all kind of...the same?

I'm someone who puts thousands of hours into these games and generally enjoy the run up to the boss rather than the bosses themselves. Too many people run through the game to the "real challenge", glossing over the idea that many enemies could be bosses if they just had bigger health bars. Regular enemies are fun to fight too and have engaging movesets, this is where you come in. Very good ranking and unbiased constructive analysis of the fun/fairness in the designs! I can actually feel the experience and knowledge in your playstyle as well I personally think the dragon slayer armour that you find in the ringed city swamp is the best enemy in the game, much like his boss counterpart. Man, the caged hollows have to be one of my favorites. Sure, after you know the game they are no threat really, but as a beginner who still has to learn that in this game you cant loose your focus at any times they are just incredibly good, and give so much to the dark and depressing atmosphere of the game, its design makes just so much sense, and gives such a good and unique flavor to the game. Generally speaking i think the Undead Settlement is a highlight of the whole game, because it feels so random and dangerous, the artstyle is unique as hell, the secrets are brilliantly placed and vast, the huge fucker throwing the giant spears is a one of a kind experience, and the npc's are pretty fleshed out and interesting too.

I have to say sewer centipedes are extremely well-designed enemies. I'll always remember seeing them in playthrought #1, with DS3 being my first souls game. I was instantly like "Yeah game, I know your tricks, it's a dead body that'll rise up as soon as I get close, just another zombie. Try something new, can't trick me with that anymore"... And 5 seconds later I literally jumped from my chair seeing what I thought to be a simple hollow enemy being a nightmarish insect lady monster thing. It absolutely tricked me and it was so hilarious I have no shame in admitting that.

The thing with the Jailers is that their ability does not work when the player hides behind a wall or something. They must be able to directly look at you. In the main hall of the dungeon area you can separate them by shooting an arrow at a single Jailer to get his attention. Then hide behind a wall and wait for him to come all the way to you while being unable to use his ability. When he is there you can take him out. This is a great way to deal with all of them, sure it's definitely time consuming but relatively safe. But FUCK leaping Ghrus and Pus of Men. and the giant crab enemies are too spammy with their claw attacks in my opinion.

I don't understand how angels discourage exploration. I felt very compelled to explore every nook and cranny to find the larva to kill it and remove the angels out of the area. By the moment i killed the larvae, i had already explored about half the entire place, which changed how the dynamic of the area played halfway through.

Something I love about the Ringed Knights is that they change their armor/poise dynamically and you have to change your strategy depending on the situation. The sword variant gains armor when they hold a stance and the shield/lance variant gains it when they use their weapon art. I find this a lot more interesting way of buffing enemies instead of giving them passive poise like some of the harder enemies in Elden Ring, which usually just leads to heavy melee weapons not being able to do much without playing it safe. You complain about R1 spam being too powerful, but I actually really like the idea of the game encouraging offense as a way to counter the aggression of foes. I think Ringed Knights strike the right balance of rewarding offense, while still pushing you to try other strategies, such as going for backstabs.

I feel like I'm one of the only people who thinks thralls (and imps from ER) are good enemies. While rather harmless one-on-one, their ambushes and how they can overwhelm you in groups causes you play more cautiously and be more spatially aware because of their ability to hang off walls and ceilings. I think the imps with their ability to look like lifeless statues and blend in feel like the more refined version of the enemy. Also, their fast attacks with bleed weapons encourage shield use.

For some of the "bad enemies" like the corvians, pus of man, and maggots. They're just learning curve enemies. Corvians applaud aggressive, high dps play styles, pus of man just use fire even bombs, maggots hold a half pound torch and use fire again. Definitely agree with the Lothric Knights, they taught me how to get good. DS3 was my first Souls experience.

I mostly agree with you but you lack information on certain enemies. A lot of people have commented already on goob snakemen and maggot creatures basically being stunlocked by fire. The priests in lothric castle don't just heal, they buff the enemies with less damage taken and more damage dealt and they are almost always placed in a way where you can sneak behind the knight to deal with the priest first, which I think it is worth mentioning. I totally disagree on Gargoyles (janking your camera around and being annoying in with blocking attacks with their wings because they happen to whip their shoulder in your direction at that exact moment), Pontiff Knights (the mix of super fast and delayed attacks feels like they just want a "GotchaMoment" out of the player and they felt quite trivial after you get used to them) and Elder Ghrus (they are not meant to be fought as they just suck with the spirits and swamp enviroment but you mentioned the bias so I think you get it). I also noticed that you really got a boner for cool armored dudes which I can get behind and they mostly fun to fight but in my opinion silver and black knights are a joke, even with them being faster than ds1 in a 1on1 situation you can basically just backstab chain and roll out of most attacks so easy as they give you a lot of openings after each attack unlike Darkwraith who are more modern in not stopping all movement after each and every swing/combo for a good second. Straight sword Lothric knights have a somewhat cheap side to them like the pontiff knights in they just have a mix out of SUPERDUPERFAST and slow moves with never letting up, difference is that they don't become trivial when fought a bit and I swear it is impossible to parry the straight sword Lothric knights fast slash without guessing, just on pure reaction. I can get behind the cathedral knight ranking high, they are really fun to fight. I don't know about the winged knights, their moveset is weird but playful in a way but every move they make they just open up their backs like "stab here" which always worked on me especially the polearm ones since their reach is 2 football fields I always just opt to roll past them and then they show me their plump juicy backs, ripe for the picking. I think my top 3 are grabby hands(Monstrosity of sin), and on a little side note, I am kind of disappointed that fromsoft is 85% inspired by other media to 99% ripping off designes for most of their horrendous creatures, but I mean is anything truly original with so many creative heads in the last 200 years? Maybe, but I am 99% sure that Miyazaki got Lovecraft wiki open when coming up with the weirder shit and combines it with popular original gangsta manga, which works and is cool and all but artorias for example is just literally guts(I am sorry but I felt the need for the baby tantrum explaining it after the mention that fromsoft is cooking up eldritch abominations, sadly it is more like a prepped meal kit with following the recipe). Sorry about that, back to the topic, grabby hands, fiery axe demons and grown crystal lizards are my top 3 with switching places all the time. Sorry if my comment seems a little heated just let me assure you it is not, I am fine and I just like to discuss and all I mentioned is just my personal feelings about the the topics and I am very passionate about them especially on fromsoft games in which I have combined close 1500 hours in ds 1,2 and 3 alone in which I am usually satisfied after my 5th playthrough or so and returning a lot over the years and 20 minutes of pvp cursing at the netcode. I mean no ill will to anyone and respect all opinions. Have a nice day

Pus of Man are weak to fire damage and firebombs make them stagger for quite a while. 2 instances of the stagger on NG+0 in the early game and 1 stagger late game is enough to kill them outright. Fire spells work too. And you can kill the hollow before the transfromation, so if you don't care about the rewards or you have them already, you can skip them entirely.

To be honest, I personally would've put cathedral knights above ringed knights. The ringed knights are flashy, but nothing can compare to being kicked around like a soccer ball by a cathedral knight, or punched by one. True chads. Also, I like the jailers, their position and moveset makes sense as they are in fact meant to keep their prisoners in jail and powerless. What better way to do that than by reducing their health, slowing them and making them unable to heal?
