Ive seen your gen chem videos and Im pretty sure within that category you have finished the series. Is it correct to assume that you're now starting to focus more on organic chemistry? I sure hope so. You're an excellent professor
@ChadsPrep4 жыл бұрын
Hello Norman! There's already a complete organic chemistry playlist as well (and general physics too). But students have requested video lectures using a whiteboard. My organic playlist was made using a tablet and a green screen so I'm going back and remaking them using a whiteboard. And I'm starting with the end of the semester topics for all the students who are now suddenly learning things online and wish they had a whiteboard lecture. Once I complete the end of semester topics for Ochem 1 and 2 I'll go back and finish the rest of the topics. But I'm doing the same for gen chem. It's been a few years since my original playlist and I'm updating the series and hopefully doing a better job teaching it. It isn't in front of students though (as we're all in isolation) so it may not be as engaging but it will still be a very clear and hopefully mildly entertaining presentation of the material. And the plan is to add some biochem this summer as well. Ok I'm going to shut up now! Happy Studying!

E1 mechanism is favoured as compared to SN1 mechanism rxn by branching at beta carbon for alkyl halide. Can you explain this statement.
@ChadsPrep3 жыл бұрын
First this is not something normally presented and not something I address in the video, but is definitely true! If you look at your carbocation, we already know that the more substituted it is the more stable it is and the more likely it is to form. However, the concept you mention is referring not to the carbocation itself (could be called the alpha carbon), but to the adjacent carbons (referred to as beta carbons). More "branching" at the beta carbon simply refers to having more substituted beta carbons (tertiary > secondary > primary). A more branched beta carbon has two effects: 1) It hinders nucleophilic attack which hinders SN1. 2) It leads to the formation of a more substituted (and more stable) alkene in an E1 reaction thus favoring E1. Ultimately, "beta branching" simultaneously reduces the likelihood of SN1 and increases the likelihood of E1. Hope this helps!

1:00:40 Could you explain why the deprotonation occur in the ethanol? I know that the leaving proton would eventually bind with another ethanol in the solution resulting in CH3CH2OH2 (with a formal charge of +1), but I still can't seem to figure out the reason why. Is it because the proton repels the carbocation?
@ChadsPrep2 жыл бұрын
If you look at it in terms of energetics alone it won't make any sense. Having one protonated alcohol vs having another shouldn't make much of a difference in stability and energy. However, there are way more solvent molecules (ethanol) and therefore it is way more likely to end up as the species that is protonated. In a room full of myself and students I typically liken it to a game of 'hot potato.' If we are all passing around a hot potato who is more likely to end up with it: a student or the instructor? Well a student is more likely simply because there are way more students. Same thing here. There are way more solvent molecules than the product so they are more likely to end up with the extra proton. Hope this helps!
@yiumyoumsan69972 жыл бұрын
@@ChadsPrep I'm sorry, it hasn't still clicked yet. So with that analogy, are you saying that the protonation and deprotonation in the ethanols occur constantly throughout the solution even when they don't react with the substrates?
