Thank you for being the kind of teacher that explains patiently and clearly. You would have been one of my favorite teachers when I was a kid 🎉. Now, I'm all grown up and you're still one of my favorite teachers 😊. Thank you!

Hi Chad. This was a very helpful informative video for anyone just starting out. When I 1st started out I was randomly buying stuff as I wasn't informed enough to know what to go for. (I still have some of it 😅) I started classes in Jan this year and fell in live with silversmithing. My best advice for beginners like me - is take time designing. Use paper templates to see how it looks, then make it in copper before committing your design to the more expensive metals like silver.

Your videos have made me much more interested in using square wire. I use citric acid and water for pickle and mustard powder instead of liver of sulphur because I have serious chemical sensitivities. I watched a thing the other day that said hard so older flows at higher temperatures the more times it is heated because the heating alters the alloy.

@@JustME-ft4di Cool! I’ve never heard of using mustard:). That is probably true about the hard solder.

Besides a lot you've allready mentioned, I use a lot of 0.5mm sheet for backing in combination with decor bands for setting opals. I started as an opal cutter, and that hobby lead me into the silver smithing. The decor bands is very easy to work around a stone for a beginner, but easy to melt when soldering to a back plate, so all in all good practice 😅 I rarely use anything but hard solder myself, but I can only get a hold on wire. It comes in 0.8mm round wire I think it was, so by useing my draw plate I made it as thin as possible and then flatened most of it super thin with the rolling mill. That makes it very easy to get the right amount of solder for delicate pieces.

I've used medium wire solder for soldering bezels to backs for 47 year years. Less danger of eroding the bezel seam and the wire contacts both the bezel and the plate.

Well, all those supplies are not readily available everywhere in this world. Especially for hobbyists. So I keep a small supply of pure silver and copper, plus some zinc and indium for solders. And of course I remelt my scrap. The rolling mill and the draw plate enable me to have proper raw materials for every project. You can call it the Old Way, I guess )))

Rio Grande's Crazy 8 wire makes the best large ring shanks. I've never found a use for low dome. In getting to milling charge, you are only getting 92.5 % silver with Sterling

Hey Chad, thanks for another great video. It's always interesting to hear opinions on what materials to keep around and why. I'm curious what company/companies you prefer to buy your raw materials from? I was a pretty loyal Monster Slayer customer for many years, I found that they always had what I needed, and the prices were a little lower that some of the competitors. However, they went out of business permanently over the summer and I'm not sure where to try next. I took a look at Rio Grande, but I feel like their markup over spot for wire was pretty high. Maybe I just got spoiled dealing with Monster Slayer. Any advice on vendors would be appreciated! Keep up the good work.

I do generally get my raw materials from Rio, but I know there are other suppliers that might have slightly better prices. I just haven't had time to do much research about that. Anyone else here have any suggestions for Mike?
