Building a Wood Frame Roof for My Adobe Hut (episode 33)

I have built small shelters within these adobe walls and they keep me warm at night but now is the time to build a roof and turn this project into the hut it was intended to be. When the roof is complete I will have a lot of room inside to stay busy and warm while the cold air of winter is kept outside. When spring arrives I will remove the roof and finish building the walls. The lessons learned from building this roof will then aid me to build a better roof in the spring.
The frame of this roof is made mostly of juniper branches which are quite strong. I used long straight branches of desert willow to weave it all together and create connecting cross beams that will support the juniper bark that will cover the entire roof. I also used approximately 100 feet (31 meters) of yucca cordage. It required at least ten hours for me to make the cordage by rolling the yucca fibers together on my leg. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including KZbin. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

This gives insight into what life used to be. After physical work you sit down to rest and while resting you are making cordage. Something about this seems like how human life was meant to be.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 8 ай бұрын
That’s exactly right. I believe humans worked, ate and slept almost all the time. Only in times of abundance would there be festivities. Over the course of history as we advanced technologically and gained intelligence we learned how to leverage our time and use animals, servants and slaves to our individual benefit and that has progressed so far that now people spend hours every day wasting time on devices like the one in your hand right now.

Of all the things we underestimate needing in a low-tech living situation, it's going to be things like cordage and containers. Thread, cord, rope, mats for sleeping on, sitting on, even just collecting seeds that we're threshing free. Baskets, bowls, cups, plates, pots for cooking and jars for storing. If a community wants to survive, there has to be someone constantly making at least some of these things. Doing it all on your own is amazing, and definitely requires a lot of work. Your perseverence as well as your constantly increasing skills are impressive. ♥

@@KiseiruYoshioka Unfortunately there is no straw-like grass here. I haven't found any. But if you properly make a thick roof with grass it will be water resistant. That incense from the torch can actually be very useful in the summer as a mosquito repellent! Also, it's good that you cleared the bark off the juniper branches for two reasons: one, it greatly reduces fire hazard, as juniper bark catches sparks very well, and also it will prolong its lifespan. Bark in the shade of the roof would trap moisture, as well as make a cozy home for wood eating bugs if you didn't remove it. Probably not as important in the dry climate you're in, but here in Europe it's pretty much imperative to de-bark any logs used for a permanent shelter.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, those are good points and reasons to remove the bark. Especially for removing hiding places for critters. And yeah, the incense should help keep mosquitoes away during the brief period of summer humidity.

This looks like a good rabbit trapping area. Once I made a traditional mesa dweller robe from rabbit hides. I got the design from a museum piece. The hides were cut into a spiral that is around an inch wide. Then attach the hide stips at the ends, one after another. The rabbit hide (hair on) should be about 20 hides and when the long strip is ready you have to twist it, working to keep the hair on the outside but some will be on the inside of the twisted hide. Then weave it as if you are making a net. The space between each loop depends on what kind of temperature and weather is in the area where it will be used. I gifted the robe which is almost the size of a bed throw blanket, to my mother. Her mother was full Cherokee. When they were forced on the Trail of Tears, where they ended up was rabbit country but I have only found a reference of pre-white clothing from a one really great book. This makes a great idea for a baby blanket but smaller. There is nothing like soft fur against your flesh. Cozy.

I have seen and read the description for making a rabbit fur blanket in a book titled SURVIVAL SKILLS OF NATIVE CALIFORNIA. When I get a supply of rabbit furs I definitely intend to make a blanket like you described. I can only imagine how warm and comfortable it must be.

I'm sure it's likely been suggested before but, something that may be of interest to you is to find out if your area had any prior volcanic activity in earlier ages of it's existence. This may lead you to finding good quality stone for various tools, or even volcanic glass (Obsidian and various others.) Which make for great however exceedingly dangerous tools. Hide gloves would be a heavy recommendation as well for any further work with stone in general, save your hands some wear and tear and possibly a neat project to figure out. Ancient sewing! The videos are great and I hope you have safe adventures following our ancestors foot-prints.

Yes, this whole area is covered with volcanic rock. In this video I mentioned that rhyolite is a volcanic rock that is very abundant here. I haven't found obsidian here but I did brick a small obsidian rock with me in the beginning.

At your profile`s photo we can see how you developed in a wild strong men with modern experience, and not changing that image is part of the success. You could show what your training routine looks like now. It's been a long time since your last videos about it. Anyway, your "doing" looks fantastic as allways. Health and motivation to you. Greetings..👋💪

Yeah, I have not updated any of my profile since 2014! I haven't been really training for four months. I've been so busy working out here and making stuff and then I have other unrelated responsibilities too. Besides the physical work out here I also regularly do pushups, pullups, air squats and some running. But now that the hut is livable I'm going to focus more on food and exercise so you'll be seeing those videos starting in about a month.

@@ChadZuberAdventures Better than anticipated :) Out of curiosity, are you planning on salvaging the smaller cordage used on the outside ring? Or are you going to try to walk the roof up to a higher level when you start construction on the walls?

@@libertyenjoyer2247 I plan to try and salvage and reuse the same cordage. But I will have plenty of cordage made if that doesn't work.
