Since ancient times primitive cultures around the world have made fish traps to gain an advantage in the daily struggle to survive. The design of these fish traps varies greatly depending on the materials available and the traditional techniques of the craftsmen who make them. In this video I use readily available materials consisting of seep willow (Baccharis salicifolia), desert willow (Chilopsis linearis) and cordage made of banana yucca (Yucca baccata) to build a fish trap to use in the stream near my camp. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

Editing: Final Cut Pro X on MacBook Air

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including KZbin. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

Try soaking the willow switches for 24 to 36 hours. The ones you split in half to hold the straight ones together. Its said to "take the spite out". Also i winced at the rope you used to hold the lid on, that represets a huge time investment. You can use 4 or 5 "chop sticks" narrow to fatter straight sticks which pierce from the outer basket through the layers to the otherside. Coming from different angles they lock eachother and the lid together.
@ladyofthemasque
@ladyofthemasque 2 жыл бұрын
I'd agree with this. The pinning sticks can be less than perfectly straight, too, ideally with a few knots or knobs to help lock them in place if they're not a super-tight fit. Fast to get on, fast to get off. I'd think 3 would do okay, if they fit well, since the fish aren't going to be able to push the funnel out of the basket mouth, and if you pin them like a triangle, that leaves a good-sized hole in the middle for the fish to slip through on their way to the throat of the funnel in the top.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
That's a very good tip for securing the funnel to the main basket. I still did want a rope for carrying the basket and lifting it out of the water although not essential the rope does help to more evenly distribute the weight of the basket when it is lifted out of the water.

Hello 👋, I was very impressed by your life in the wild. You may feel the true freedom that our ancestors once felt. After all, you cook yourself, looking for materials (water, berries or stones, sticks, clay) for different purposes (hunting, cooking, construction), which is commendable. Thank you Chad Zuber, you are a brave person who walks alone in nature and gives us a good mood. Awesome video. We would make these out of cane as children for fun in Florida. But we would push the bases of the stems into the soil in a circle formation then bend it into a cone shape up top lashed with vines. They definitely worked for perch and bluegills. Enough to cook up for a few kids. Great work brother.

You have to season the trap by putting rocks in it to keep it submerged under water for at least 3 days or it will float. And you will need some kind of bait like liver or something stinky for the cat fish. Worms packed into a mud ball will catch some game fish. normally a bait bag is used tied into the back area of the trap. You can make a small mesh bag out of the cordage you make. Like quarter inch holes or smaller for the mesh so the bait stays put. And fish swim up stream, so they face the direction of the current helps the breath better. The trap opening needs to face down stream for maximum usage. Fish will travel upstream following the scent of the bait. The current will keep them in the trap till you are ready to retrieve them. It's a great design. Hope you can make it work for you on the show. I had Really good luck with the ones I made. I always had a meal thanks to the fish trap.

Actually, I think those willows would make for a good roofing material. Create a basket that serves as a base and then use the bark. I still think that the current roof needs something to keep it in place. Again, a basket type framework would work, even just rings to keep the bark in place. I'm concerned about the wind. Good luck fishing! I've seen others successfully use this type of basket for fishing.👍🏻😊
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if the willows are close enough together then they could be useful in making the roof. The wind hasn't been a problem so far. Once in a while a piece of bark gets moved but I just add more.

Hi Chad, my neighbours grow and work with willow. They have taught me that you can soften the willow shoots by drying them completely and soaking them in water. I hope this helps.

Yes, soaking in hot water really works well. At the stream I could soak them in cold water but here I don't have a large tub to soak them in. Sometimes you just have to do your best with what you got.

Chad your fish trap is impressive. From what I understand all you need is a cage and a cone. I think you could have gotten away with making a drum shape and then for the end made a lid for easy extraction. Might have made the volume a bit bigger. It should work very well. With the willow branches can you hammer them much like you do with the yucca? If so, will this make them more pliable? As all you are doing is braking the fibers up? Kinda like when you went to bend the ends at the start? I am wondering if there are a few stages and those willow branches would hold together still. For example a solid one like you used to make it a circle. Then a slightly beat one to weave each branch. Then a more beat one to help tie it off? Either way its very impressive! I enjoyed it a lot.

I the basket in this shape because it is more simple and faster to make. A flat bottom crossed my mind but would have taken much more time. The stiff stems of mule fat (seep willow) don't bend as well as desert willow. There are ways to make the desert willow stems more pliable for weaving. My favorite way is heat or hot water but that would take a long time because there are so many bends that need to be made. I have to first determine how effective this trap is. In the future I will make more traps and perhaps find other ways to make them.

Chad: Just a thought, what if you were to crush the whole willow branch before you weave them, it might be more pliable. Also, if that works, then it might make a good heavy cordage. split it into quarters and beat the tar out of it. Let me know what you think... and the spot on your shoulder, I thought you might have caught a nasty bruise, thanks for explaining.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be more pliable but also weaker. The entire basket would be more flimsy if I made the willow stems more pliable that way. I've made cordage from the bark of willow but it isn't nearly as strong as yucca cordage, especially after it dries. Willow bark gets brittle when dry.

Have you considered making a fish net? Not the kind you throw, but the kind with a handle, so you could scoop the fish out of the water. Unless it's recently rained, the water seems to be clear enough to easily see the fish to scoop them up I can't wait to see how effective the trap is though, hopefully it will make making a net moot.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I once made a small one but I would need a bigger one. The fish are fast and react quickly at the first sign of threat so it's not as easy as just dipping a net and scooping them up. I will have to be more clever than that.

I wonder if any of the native pants produce a high enough quality oil that you could then use in a clay lamp? You have the wick already with either Yucca or bark. I'm not sure if you could make candles from plants... I'm sure there are methods, but probably use modern chemicals. Speaking of lighting, have you done any research into distillation of high proof alcohol?
@ChadZuberAdventures

Yeah, there are plants and seeds that can provide oil but it is a lengthy process to make enough oil to burn. I have to experiment with this and I have had the idea of making oil lamps for a long time. I've done some preliminary experiments that were unsuccessful so I will have to try again.

Nice job on building your fish trap. I hope it works and you get to consume some of those fish in the stream. I'd still like to see if you can catch one with a hook and line. Have you tried to boil (or steam) cactus or other thorns to see if they can be shaped into a hook? If so, you could make a crude fishing fly using the thorn, thread, hair, fur, feathers or even a small slice of leather to mimic a minnow. Some of the fish you showed in previous episodes appeared to be a type of sunfish or bluegill. They are extremely easy to fool into striking an object. I've even caught them on pieces of cloth. When stalking fish in a stream, be warry of your shadow, move slowly, don't cause any rocks to move suddenly and avoid stepping on sticks and breaking them. All of those situations will spook fish. Next time you're down by the stream and you see fish, take a dry stick and snap it underwater. You'll see the fish will react to the sound in a negative way. Good luck!
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I will experiment with hook and line again. I had no problem getting the fish to bite. The problem was in the hook. I just couldn't hook them.... I'll try snapping a stick underwater and see how the fish react. Thanks!

When you were showing you cooking your food and stoking it with wood chips, I had a idea. I remember at one point you mentioned how during summer the hut may get too warm due to the fire, and that you would occasionally have to light it to cook which would heat up the hut. But what if you made just a small clay tile that you can place into the opening or over the opening of the little fireplace and treat it like a oven, It would probably help keep the heat inside of the fireplace to prevent the hut from heating up too much and it would also help cook the food.

I think your fish trap is a true work of art. And I find it exciting what people come up with. Only my approach is not. Because I generally don't like to kill animals. I use beans, nuts and eggs for enough protein. This is not meant to be a condemnation, or a discussion about morality. Only in my world would it not need this extreme effort to build a fish trap. That was what I wanted to say. Plant food makes much less effort. It doesn't run away :D.

I wish I could be healthy and strong by just eating plants. Believe me, I do. But just as the shark eats fish and animals, the lion eats animals, the snake eats animals, the dog eats animals, we do not condemn nature do we? Therefore we must also accept the historical truth that humans have eaten animals as a major part of the diet for thousands of years. Today it is possible to be vegan and be healthy only because of the industrialization of the food supply and technologies that isolate certain nutrients such as protein derived from plants.
@Zielfuehrend.

@@ChadZuberAdventures Oh, no problem. I did not want to contradict any historical truth or nature. I know too little about the universe to be able to speak absolutely of what is right and healthy. I realized only for myself that killing animals is no longer an option for me. And I just wanted to say that plant food makes less effort. Who knows where we and nature will develop towards.
