It's really hard to explain why, but I genuinely enjoy this series. Even though I may never apply these survival skills any time soon, every episode delivers educational nature content in such an atmospheric way. Almost feels like I'm actually out there in the wild, adventuring and being guided by Chad as I discover more about the Earth. It's a very refreshing feeling.

@@lindaseel8633 Nice for you! I moved away from my home town as well. I wanted to have a rather big garden. Bought one, and found out that when I was worn out by my demanding social job, I felt kinda depressed. Being in nature and working in my garden refilled my batteries in a way hardly anything did. I'm planning on building communities (not communes, just families with sane people, who loosely collaborate when it comes to field work, buying machines together, building some self-sustainability, and where children can play and maybe learn with spiritually healthy children). It's quite hard here in Germany to do so, but I'm on it and made at least some progress. I hope it will be done when my children will get children themselves.

Yess!!! I see dense clay. Perhaps once you go deeper we will get to see another clay pot making video. Words cannot describe my excitement! You know what would be pretty cool. A fermentation pot. Similar to a normal clay pot but you create an extruding lip which holds about 1-2cm of water. The lid fits into that. It creates a primitive valve that lets gasses bubble out but prevents oxygen from getting in. My grandparents have one of those that was made a couple of 100 years ago and it's amazing. Mostly ornamental now. If I can find a name for it I will comment it below

Happy to see you in a biome that I have enjoyed for most of my life. If I may give you a few thing to look into if your interested. There is a cactus called hedgehog, it is symbiotic to other plants and typically found under or near their cover, small groups of cactus bases. At the base of these groups, just after a bloom, it'll bear fruit much like the prickly pear. small strawberry shape with fiber hairs on them, easy to wipe the fibers with bark. hold the stem like a strawberry and eat the tip up to Just before the stem (like a strawberry). it is a delicacy, a weird cross from a citrus and a strawberry, only available during the mid to early spring. Very tasty, but you might be a tad north for them, but if not, give them a try. (always inspect for worms.) Second tip is on the spring. Congrats, that is a good find. it is very common to find those with stagnant water. very hard to truly enjoy without some cleaning. something you can do is dig out the sediment a bit to get a tab bit more depth. Once you have maybe 3-4 inches depth with a foot to 8" diameter, you can stabilize with a bit of white ash. roughly a tablespoon to 1k Gals. The potassium from the ash helps to change the PH in the water to deal with the microbial issues. Followed by a sand filter basket to remove some of the bigger stuff. remember if you don't see plant life enjoying it, there is a reason. The Hopi were known to plant a symbiotic plant into the middle of that bowl to help clean and as a sign if the water went bad. something to think about and look into. Loving the New series, keep up the great work!

Yeah, it's a seep, and it only has water when there's been enough rainfall. Making adobe bricks depends a lot on the type of soil. It must contain a good amount of clay. Soft topsoil won't work.

Keeping busy distracts the mind from thoughts of loneliness etc. When I was thruhiking the AT, life gets simple ... there's a routine every day that doesn't change much. It allowed my mind to settle from many of the distractions found in society. The mental challenges I experience daily in society faded away as my mind learned to simply let go of them in order to reserve energy for other tasks. Additionally, learning to quiet the mind allowed me to focus on the task in front of me which was not to get hurt with every step I took.

When I watch you working so hard, I am having a hard time, too. I thought: hah, if I only could help you. I could go and harvest some berries and go fishing while you are making the bricks. And I could prepare a meal. All of a sudden the word community becomes a whole, deeper sense. And also it inspires me and I ask myself, how I could improve my flat and I painted my kitchen. The fruit of the prickly pear cactus seems to have red pigments. If so that is a beautiful color for painting (maybe). With wheat or wheat like substance, salt, water and the pigment it would make a nice paint. But no salt is around (yet).
@ChadZuberAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yes! The value of a community is so apparent here. I'm always thinking like that... I have read that the juice of the prickly pear was used as a dye. I haven't experimented with that yet, but I will. No, I haven't found salt either.

Question: How does bark removal affect the Juniper tree? Answer: Yes. The tree will not grow back bark but it will try to heal the wound by growing around and eventually (hopefully) closing it. In the wild, you can use mud to cover the area to stop bugs from invading the tree and to cover the inner bark. Prevent the tree from dying by not removing the bark all the way around the trunk and by collecting fallen bark for the bulk of your needs. The tree can be then watered after the removal to help it recover. Sustainability comes with responsibility and action. I love this channel and the information shared. It is done well and he isn't hard on the eyes of this old hippy so I am not bashing, just adding to content. Happy Thanksgiving1

TIP/ experiment: A simple way to filter water is to have two containers one filed with dirty water and one empty then you can put something like string or paper (if paper you can role it to be like string)(this can be anything that has fibers), Then if you put the string/fiber thingy so that it touches the water at one end and goes down a bit in the other container make sure that the fiber thingy that is stringys end(in the empty bottle) is lower than the other. The water will slowly flow to the empty bottle. But it may not be drinkable in bigger amounts. But if you ad charcoal with a high surface area it can pick up nasty things witch can make it more drinkable.
@ChadZuberAdventures3 жыл бұрын
That sounds very interesting. I'm not sure that it will work in this arid climate though. The water may evaporate before collecting in the empty jar.
