You'd be very surprised with how many are being bought for children's riding ponys, unfortunately the price wasn't quite as high as we'd like but you can't have it all, the fact they go to loving homes is great and we do get updates on the dartmoor hill pony facebook page with how they are getting on

My last comment was removed as it didn't fit the image but it's still the same...Sadly many of these ponies will go to foriegn meat markets or for pet food.....Sorry, but it's the truth...I live on Dartmoor.....

These pony's go to new homes, I'd appreciate you having your facts correct before giving incorrect information. we are trying to keep the dartmoor pony alive on the moor. If you live on dartmoor, you should understand that.

@kathleen7498 I've watched this sale several times, it's the sane in any horse auction, none are hurt, granted they are unsettled. They become wonderful ruding/driving ponies by this time next year. There will always be Karen's who know better... ..

What a slice of rural Devon. Thank you for sharing it with us. How old are these ponies? Would they have spend their entire lives up to this point with their herd up on the moor, or have they been brought down before?
@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Our foals would have spent their whole life with their herd until the day or two after gathering when we ween them off the mares. They would be roughly 6-7 months old, if we get anything younger, we run on for either breading or for the next sale as they'd be a bit too young to be weened at that point. Any foals we select to keep for breeding also stay in to be branded so we can easily identify, and then go back out with their herd 🙂
@elkins4406 Жыл бұрын
@@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm Aw, poor things. A rough time for them, to be sure. Although I know it can't happen for all of them, I hope as many as possible go to good homes with people who will care for them and train them up when they're old enough...or at least let them be pasture pals for some other horse. Thanks so much for answering my questions!

What is the future for the ones that don’t sell?
@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm Жыл бұрын
So this year we have a 2nd and 3rd sale. This 1st sale was for 2year old foals the 2nd sale is for older ponys and if space foals that either didn't make it into the 1st sale or didn't sell, than anything that doesn't sell or didn't make it in will go into the 3rd sale which is a online sale. These pony's make great children pony's and we try to ensure they all go to nice homes, but like anything in market or auction you don't actually know. There is a dartmoor pony Facebook page where some buys do post about their pony's and its lovely to see them in their new home. We also sell privately

It goes on in a small town call chagford in Devon, happens every year in October - this year they are holding 2 physical sales (12th Oct & 2nd Nov) and 1 online sale in December. I will find the website and put the link below the description later this evening 🙂

Do these go to meat market?
@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm Жыл бұрын
No, as far as I'm aware most if not all go to loving homes and we have a Facebook page for dartmoor hill ponys where new owners post and ita lovely to see them. The whole point of the sale is for them to avoid the meat market and go to loving homes and have good lives that way we can keep the dartmoor hill pony breeding on the moors, without the sale sadly the moorland breeding would die out, and we don't want that .
@andrewgilbertson5356 Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Is was along time ago when I lived at Bow, we used to visit Chagford to go go on to the moors, swim in the outdoor pool and sometimes watch sheep, or ponies being brought off the moor for sale. About 50 years ago so it’s goo to things have changed for the better.@@Mortimoresmoorlandfarm

It is a stressful day as any market but when you seen them the next day at their new homes its worth it.
