As long as Vietnam is still ruled by the oppressive and exploitive Communist regime, her potential remains greatly diminished. For any 1% that wants to stay, 99% of the population wants to get out, and many have risked their lives doing just that (for example, 39 doomed lives found in UK container truck recently on the news, and that's only what's been reported), unfortunately. Murderous Vietnamese Commie regime even had a thug murdered Christian pastor Giuse Trần Ngọc Thanh, like it has done with many other pastors across the nation. There is a reason why the current Commie Vietnam ranks at the bottom of the world in freedom of speech, (true) freedom of religion, and freedom of the press, barely above Commie China and Commie North Korea. There is no true freedom of religion in Commie Vietnam, as this corrupt Vietnamese Commie regime only authorized the fake organizations headed by Commie monks, many of whom were Commie Party officials, and those religious organizations not approved to be infiltrated by them or headed by their Commie agents are accused of malicious and nonexistent crimes and banned, with innocent religious leaders arrested and jailed, as in the recent case with Thiền Am Bên Bờ Vũ Trụ, a harmless Buddhist meditation monastery, for simply having many followers (hence, more influences that the regime fears it can't control) than the Commie Party's officially approved ones. Similarly, its passport ranks at the bottom, 89th out of 111 countries for a reason, barely above North Korea 104th rank. even below many African nations. For comparison, South Korea is at 2nd rank. That's what Republic of South Vietnam would have likely been ranked among at least the top 10 had it not been invaded and occupied by the North Vietnamese Commie terrorists, aided by Commie Soviet and Commie China. Search "cuop dat dan" (meaning "land-robbing of citizens") to see millions of footages across the country from North to South, spanning for decades, dated back to Ho Chi Minh's bloody land reform 1953-1956 that killed nearly 1 million North Vietnamese in only 4 years, or 250K people brutally slaughtered in torturous painful deaths (like being shot, stabbed, mutilated while being alive, or heads being plowed over by water buffaloes while bodies being buried underground) each year on average to rob their lands and homes. Even today, if the rightful owners refuse to have their homes or lands robbed, the ruthless Vietnamese Commie terrorist regime simply jail or massacre them, have tractors run over their bodies or openly assassinate them in their own homes. The single greatest decision I made in my life was moving there at 26 with no plan and 2,600 in my bank account. Spent 8 1/2 years in Saigon, moved to Japan, and China. Went to Vietnam from Sweden at the end of june this year (2023) and have to agree on several points.. 1. EVERYBODY were friendly and gave great service. As a tall white bearded man they often gave us tables closer to the enterance to show other tourists that it were ok to eat there -but the food were so great everytime so why shouldn't they? :) Everybody were so proud of their food and glad that I liked it and could eat without a fork. What I DIDN'T like though is that I have been doing intermittent fasting for 10+ years and that's all lost if going to family in Vietnam.. the breakfast is like a dinner! -And no way I could say no to the food.. 2. The traffic... no joke.. I really felt that it's so nice after returning to Sweden.. Sure it's chaos when you look at it -but it works. There are lights and rules but it still works. When comming back to Sweden I just think "JUST GO!!!!" alot of more times than I did before. :'D 3. The food and living... AirBNB is the key.. Hotels are nice as well -but the airbnb is on another level... just a pincode and there you are. Then just download the GRAB app and all the food is there for you. I want to go back so bad just to have the fruits that we had every day -but can't have here. :( 4. The people.. This goes back to #1.. but everybody is so happy to show you their food, culture and areas. As a foreigner visiting in 2023 with my girlfriend (who's Vietnamese) everyone at every place we went to gave us (me) extra service to make sure we had a great time.. I don't know if it's because I were a foreigner or if it's just how the service were... but damn.... the people just take you in as a family member in a second if you talk to them and love to speak about their country. I have always loved Italy and thought that I would like to retire there... well, that's nice.. but no. I want to move to Vietnam and work to the day I retire. And that's comming from a Swede who thinks that 15*C is too hot...... Only con I have..... I don't like using cash as payment -but the people in Vietnam love cash. Pro: There are alot of places to take out cash so it solves itself -but it's a extra step.

But if you ride a motorbike and fall, people will come and help, ofc always be aware there are aholes around trying to grab your wallet, but well Vietnamese they could look rude in the beginning sometimes but overall very kind and warm

most of them accept mobile payment now, even street venders! ( mostly in the Southern part i believe). but you would need an account in a local bank since they dont have Apple pay here. Google pay works but never see anyone accept it (thats weird) I once paid for my meal half in cash and half by bank transfer haha

@@kyle9697 We used GRAB most of the times because we had a kitchen where we lived, but my girlfriend had the cash and used it when we went out. I used my card whenever we were able.. Hanoi and Ha Long Bay were no problem with cards but we didn't buy alot from venders.... in Ho Chi Minh there were no need for cash anywhere we went -so I think you may be correct.

I hope to retire in 6 to 8 years, and Vietnam is a possible destination for me. I have a friend that immigrated from Vietnam with his family when he was a child, and he plans to retire there so he can live like a king during his retirement, and he encourages me to do the same. I'll definitely check the country out. It was good to hear how easy it is to get the monthly tourist Visa. Not long ago, another KZbinr mentioned Vietnam would begin offering a 90-day tourist Visa, which will make it easier for expats planning to live there.

@tranduy2668 Let me guess, you're a southern overseas Viet who is all anti-socialism no matter who practices it. To recommend the Philippines...nope. The food is terrible, their culture/tradition is non existent since they embraced Western culture too much...yet aren't exactly Western. Lots of poverty there, compared to Vietnam, Vietnamese people work hard vs Filipinos whom lazy, beggars, etc. There's also the sex ick factor that exists there. I've seen a couple of videos recently of Westerners cutting their trip early (EllisWR, Ride with Gabi, etc.). Many other vloggers won't talk about it, but you get the feeling they just don't like it there compared to the rest of SE Asia. Plenty of vloggers have loved Vietnam and said it exceeded their expectations. Ask "Adventures of A+K" (was their first time in Asia and said they want to come back), "Shot in the Dark Travel" (was living in Thailand then discovered how much they love Vietnam so kept making visa runs to make more videos), "Sammy and Tommy" (planning to come back in the next few months), "Mike & Ashley" (already planning to come back again this year), "Flora and Note" (already came back and their other vlogging friends, "2Passports 1Dream" were back here again with them on a quite non vlogging vacation), etc.

Hanoi is most polluted city in Southeast Asia, and that's one of the reasons Covid-19 have been killing way more Vietnamese than citizens of neighboring countries, as persistent pollution severely damage lungs and make them vulnerable to infections. Yes, they took citizens' tax money to selectively give it to themselves) coordinated with each other to exploit the citizens even more with their dangerous nostril test kits (made by their shell company Việt á) that they falsely claimed of having been approved by World Health Organization (WHO). The result was deadly, as tens of thousands of people died needlessly. Yes, these ruling Vietnamese Commie lowlifes saw the pandemic as another great opportunity not to help but to make money out of the already indigent Vietnamese citizens most of whom could barely survive after being steered like animals by the brutal Vietnamese Commie military police into barbwired, unhygienic quarantined areas sleeping on the floors with inadequate food, water, toilet, beds, and medicine. All true. Do your research. Caveat emptor! Search for patients lying on concrete floors in hospital corridors and even under beds from Google Images. Excellent interviews all three however the first one Keith from Australia absolutely a must watch. I loved it and sort of hoped it would go on and on. The Italian guy was right that his people are highly strung and in a way boisterous so a change in culture and surroundings would not be easy to adapt to. He was saying that he is more relaxed, chilled if you like, from the experience of change in lifestyle. As a Hanoian living in Hochiminh city, I really want more foreigners to live and work in Vietnam, especially people from Western countries. Vietnam is a socialist country led by communists. But, socialism or capitalism are just ideas and theories, the important thing is the people who operate it. Many African or South Asian countries also have capitalist or liberal democratic systems like Western countries, but people operate are not Westerners, so it is impossible to make the country like the West. Communism is the same when in the hands of those who run it like Pol Pot (Cambodia), Stalin (USSR) or Mao Zedong (China), it is different from Hochiminh and Vietnam. The country of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people are not like propaganda in Western countries and Hollywood movies. The more foreign tourists come to Vietnam, the more they will see the truth..

I lived in Vietnam for 2 years back in 2006-8. Was teaching in HCMC. An awesome experience. I did work hard and 6 days a week, so no holiday and I was staying in cheap accommodation, far from District 1 . This meant a lot of motorbike riding for commuting. Met lovely people. Was forced to learn some Vietnamese to survive where I was. Now retired, I just wished there was a retirement visa or similar to allow an easier stay for expats. Border runs can be tiring and restrictive if monthly. I must admit, being a teacher in Vietnam, other expats with businesses and professional jobs tended to snob you and look down on you as a low status expat. Just my experience.

I have been living in Ha Noi for 6 months. I prefer HCMC and central Vietnam more but the weather is cooler in Ha Noi during the summer. Cost of living really depends if a person lives near tourist areas or further away. Also whether you are paying daily, weekly, monthly, or you have a long-term contract. I strongly agree that foreigners most likely will need to be more laid back and more patient if they want to stay here. Google Translate works well but I recommend learning to count in Vietnamese and learning some other words to help you socialize. Vietnamse is a tonal language. A tip I have is to treat the language as almost musical and understand the written accents to stress or not stress a sound are critical. I also recommend to learn to be "street wise" here if you want to avoid scams or being taken advantage. Most people are friendly and kind but there are some that prey on new foreigners or those that flaunt their wealth.

@@ThuyNgoc-yc5dm Xin chào! Thanks for your suggestion. I have been coming to Vietnam since 2002 and I have visited many countryside towns in the past. I am older now and spoiled so I prefer the cities more but I still will occasionally travel to the countryside. The problem with traveling in Vietnam is the poor highway system. If there's a holiday or bad weather then the highway can't handle the traffic. Things have improved since 2002 but still have a long ways to go. Buses are an option but they are often noisy and uncomfortable, at least for me 😉

@logikbinah772 You are doubting me because you looked something up online versus someone who has lived in Vietnam for 7 months and traveled all over? English is understood by many younger generations but older Vietnamese might not know much or feel less confident in conversations. It also depends whether you are staying or visiting in a tourist area or going to rural areas. Most small stores, small markets, small restaurants will not be able to speak or understand much English. A lot depends on their education level and their job experience. Many Vietnamese learn English in high school or at a university; however, the focus from most English teachers is in reading and writing with very little conversation practical instruction. This makes most, not all, Vietnamese hesitant to talk in English unless it's part of there daily work where foreigners are often customers or co-workers. Google Translate is helpful but not perfect. I still recommend learning some Vietnamese, especially numbers, to facilitate buying things and bargaining.

the rent fee is depending on where is the place you want. The place like TayHo is very expensive because that is the center place of Hanoi. Have many potential good for business there so the price is going high as well

Pros and cons everywhere I lived there for nearly 10years and most of the things I loved except the air pollution that's coz I was living in Saigon. Biggest tip learn the language to at least an intermediate level so your experience becomes even better ...it's a slog at first but becomes easier after a year or two of studying and using it! It was the best decision I've ever made learning Vietnamese!

I have lived in Da Nang for 2 years waiting for my wife's visa to come through (4 months to go) and you need to know it is a crowded, low hygine standards place that at 2:00 AM in winter is 80 degrees. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday the karaoke is going at full blast until 10:00 PM but the people are nice, the area is beautiful so if you can take the heat you will be fine.

I build a house in the south in the country side and there's no tourist there just living whit the locals, my wife is from Vietnam so we have a big family, still traveling to Sweden to work but in 2 years I can be an exact in Vietnam. The Vietnamese are so friendly and curious and if you eat and do whatever they do they love you.

For that NZ men you now can apply for a longer stay in VN like 3months -6 months visa . You need to let Vietnamese travel agent to do it for you with 5 years visa multiple entry unlimited come in /out during 5 years . I’m Vietnamese living in Australia with Australia passport/ citizen . I have used that 5 years visa. Each entry is 6 months stay .

After spending a month traveling their either country from Sapa the Pho Quoc, Ho Chi Min City/Saigon, the largest city, was my least favorite in the country full of wonderful places. We did not see that much of Da Nang, but nearby Ha Noi (41 minutes) was incredible as was Ninh Binh. Sapa tribal people were incredible. Loved Ha Noi old city.

Vietnam is a good place in terms of what you earn and spend. A good place for 1 person in Hcm would cost you around 300-450$, you can find cheaper of course but everything depends the area, your preferences e.t.c. In general you can expect to spend around 400-600$ per month for more or less comfortable living. I wouldn't say that local people are so nice and friendly, in 5 years I have never had a Vietnamese friend, most of the time I even don't know names of my Vietnamese co workers, neighbours in your building apartment most likely won't even say "hello" to you. Vendors outside most likely will try to rip off seeing you're a foreigner. If you come to VN, most likely you will end up hanging out with ppl from your country or other expats. Another con is that HCM is very polluted and stuffed with motorbikes, it is almost impossible to be a pedestrian here. Even if you just want to walk, you have to take your bike and drive to the nearest park. In general if you want to make good money, and live in a relatively cheap place, come here but don't expect too much.

Most Vietnamese people are friendly but a little shy. They are afraid that you will think they are taking advantage of you. Ask someone to do you a simple favor, then thank them by taking them out for coffee. I guarantee you will have a friend with a 90% success rate.

I am a Vietnamese and had a few years living under the viet commie rules. I know them well understanding where they originally came from. You guys fought them before in war but to understand them who and what they are, it takes time and experience living with them under their rules. The Americans failed the south vietnamese just because one simple reason: they didn't understand the vietnamese communists while fighting them. I like that you kept the part of the video where the Italian DJ compared the foreigners in Vietnam to Europe. Europe is a mess now thanks to the free immigration they have over there. I like this new knowledge that Vietnam people are accepting of foreigners, but they also make an effort to not lose their culture to the foreigners, this is very important I think.
